Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship 2015-2016

Hey guys, I am from NC and I am also waiting to hear from JKCF!! They said it will be around april. I am the first student to apply from my college!

My college does not have an honors program, will they look down upon my application? but I am an honors student
, I hold PTK office positions and I submitted my application with a 3.900 gpa

@mariamsaleh no. i mean, it shouldn’t. plenty of scholars weren’t in their school’s honors program.

Awesome, thank you so much!! I am really excited and I’ve applied to universities in NC. My goal is major in Human Anatomy and obtain a BA in Chemistry. I want to become a general doctor one day so I can help the less fortunate due to my previous experiences. I’m a top scholar from my college and was recently nominated for state awards. I also won numerous awards including a PTK scholarship but the Jack Kent Cooke is the scholarship that will support both my short and long-term goals. I have big projects to accomplish for the sake of humanity here and abroad. I want my life to be committed into helping other people because it’s what makes me happy… @optimisticky

@mariamsaleh good luck on earning one of the scholarships! This cannot be an easy decision for the judges and I am thankful that there are 85 winners, because that indicates some better statistics compared to other national scholarships. I do not think choosing winners can be easy because from my understanding the majority who apply (and truly qualify) are all excelling students, who show leadership skills, are involved on campus, donate hours to volunteering, all have an educational and career goal, and all have a story… the past we each had to overcome to get to where we are today. I cannot imagine the difficulty if there are say over 1,000 applicants who have every single aspect in common, it must tare at some heart strings to narrow down the applicants. All I can say is, as long as we each tried our best, that is all we can do. People from my community college have applied and won in the past, but when I hear about their stories I just feel worried about my chances. For example, one lady was a victim of Hurricane Katrina, her entire family died and she lost everything. That is hard core. Anyway, like I said, I wish you lots of luck. I too hope to contribute significant changes in the world, and this scholarship would mean I could afford to go to NYU.
hugs!

O… and I have a fat pug named Apple Jax!

@muffinpoptarte Love what you’ve accomplished so far! You have more than a fair chance, I would think. Thanks for sharing

Here’s a high-level of mine:

college - Virginia Community College

major - Business Administration // Finance

GPA - 3.92 (no honors)

campus clubs - PTK officer, I have a full-time job in the software industry.

community service - Over 80+ hours this school year. I try to not just volunteer for one specific cause, but rather be as impactful as I can to my community as a whole. I am part of multiple organizations that lend their time to multiple causes that range from Child and Family services, working with at-risk youth, adoption awareness, and coastal cleanup projects. With that being said, I am Hispanic and a former immigrant; I am a huge advocate of helping those that are facing hurdles imposed by their legal status and race, as I know how that feels.

dream transfer college - UVA McIntire, NYU Stern, Cornell

awards - Recipient of what’s considered “the most prestigious” scholarship offered through my state’s community college system. I have also received an award for my service hours and won an english literature competition. My PTK chapter has won multiple awards in our region, but I don’t think those really matter to my application.

brief educational goal - graduate with a degree from a top undergrad business school and an elite mba program.

brief career goal - My goal is to acquire the necessary skillset to become an entrepreneur with the purpose of using my business as a venue to assist me in my advocacy to help others through scholarships and career opportunities. I feel that not everyone that needs help wants to become a doctor, scientist or an engineer. Business is one of the most impactful ways to impact the world. I want to help those less fortunate (immigrant or not) that feel the same way.

favorite ice cream - Mcdonald’s dollar ice cream cone XD

Good luck to everyone! we are all great students with great stories!

I also have done so much and it’s too long to list now. Good luck to everyone! The things we have done is for our own learning and the benefit of other people!

I believe they also pick from each state right?

@mariamsaleh not necessarily. in the past, most scholars have come from the coasts. now there is a real emphasis on outreach in the midwest/plains region. i wouldn’t be at all surprised if this year’s transfer cohort was comprised of a record number of scholars from interior states.

@Jouuuu Thank you for sharing! I think it is really nice getting to know the other applicants
I love your outlook of business and community service. Good luck on the scholarship and your applications to transfer! I just applied to NYU and I am so nervous. It is such a wonderful school.

I saw that they picked 3 students from NC last year and the year before only 1 student…so I just really hope they will pick more scholars from NC

it depends on the applicants, ultimately. but the goal is to reach students from outlying college networks. many schools still aren’t promoting the JKCF scholarship. i was a cooke outreach representative this cycle, and really focused my energy on locating talented, high performing students that don’t typically apply for recognition/rewards or “fly under the radar.” they’re a difficult population to contact. but i believe there are scores of top performing low income community college students that have internalized the belief that they aren’t good enough. and there’s definitely a spatial/geographic factor in that.

anyway! we may be as excited to hear the results as those of you waiting.

I just want to go to a good 4-year university in NC and with the support of the foundation, I won’t be looked down upon since I started my education at a community college, especially if I am considering the Medical field. They will never understand how much I’ve cherished a community college and couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities it provided me with. At the same time, I want to show students at my college that yes, prestigious scholarships do exist, especially for CC students. I already directed 5 students toward the JKCF scholarship for next year and I am really hoping I will obtain this one so that they can see that yes the impossible was possible… I have applied to UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State…I was accepted into a 10-week paid summer research program by the National Science Foundation on cancer cells for this summer. I am now applying to NC State Scholars Program. However, i won’t be able to go to any of if i won’t win this scholarship, sadly. Sometimes, it seems like nothing but a dream.

@mariamsaleh congrats on your internship! That sounds really wonderful!
I completely emphathize on college cost, I cannot attend my top choice school without this assistance either, so heart breaking.
Never feel inferior because of going to community college though! It is a wonderful way to get started

Your accomplishments are great and I believe you’re more than qualified for this scholarship!! lets hope we are all recipients! @muffinpoptarte

When I told my college’s president that I am applying for the JKCF, she stayed quit and then laughed, this is when i met with her over due to my accomplishments… my student leadership director doesn’t know anything about it nor my PTK advisors…they already know I am a great student but hopefully i will get to surprise them because they are excited for me and don’t believe that the JKCF exists, literally a full-ride scholarship plus graduate school. I believe I am the first one to apply from my college, the same goes for PTK scholarships, I was the first one to apply from my college. P.s I found about this scholarship through Google& PTK .it’s so unreal, one year ago, I was praying to find a scholarship that would cover both my undergraduate and graduate higher education and now here i am!! it’s literally nothing but a dream…I am just so happy to have found this great foundation

Thank you for your help!! I read your comments from last year and you are a great student!! Are now at UCLA? or berkeley and how did the scholarship influence you? both your life and education …was the transition smooth? @optimisticky
