I couldnt find a thread for this cycle’s JKCF applicants so I decided to start one. The application deadline is Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. in your local time zone.

I am excited to get to know other applicants on this thread as we go through the process, previous year’s threads were beautiful communities in their own right and I hope we can create the same thing here.

Hey @Jnavas and @writerk123 I submitted mine on November 15th but I am still getting the reminders to submit which are totally freaking me out haha! I’m glad I am no longer alone on this thread. What part of the app did you guys find most difficult? For me it was the resume/CV, trying to cram a life into a reasonable length document meant I left out a whole lot of things but I think I included enough detail in the activities section of the common app to make up for it… I hope!
Also, now that I am no longer talking to myself, here is some of my info:
University Picks - Yale, UCB, UCLA, UCSC
GPA - 4.0
Volunteer hours - a few hundred, I only started logging these fairly recently, I am an immigrant and had no idea we were supposed to claim our hours, where I come from we just do things, we dont talk about them or track hours for recognition haha!
Essays - medium, I think, feedback was really good but I am never certain I have communicated what I want to say effectively.
Teacher recs - I chose people who know me well and went with one who can speak to my academic strength and one who knows me through campus advocacy work so hopefully they shared different aspects of my character. They’re both lovely human beings and excellent writers so I am confident that these will be strong.
I didn’t do another rec - was it possible?
I am an immigrant, a returning student and a parent. I’ve done some reasonably successful advocacy work on my campus and beyond and I am genuinely obsessed with community and collaboration. I hope that I shared that effectively and that there is a space for me in JKCF because this program is exciting and I really want to be part of it.
I have been stalking previous year’s threads for info about how long the process takes and what happens next, the deadline hasn’t even come up yet and I am already itching for information - so impatient

Hi, @RainbowBritey I’m an immigrant as well a DACA recipient. Are you one as well? It’s nice to meet you. Currently, the deadline has been extended so I’m not sure what the next step will be but if I find out anything I’ll let you know.

Hi everyone. This is my second time applying for this scholarship. I submitted my application yesterday around 7:00p.m. It looks like they extended the deadline until December 2. Good luck to everyone applying.
Hey Johanna, I’m not a DACA recipient but I know one who was a JKCF finalist last year! I’m from a small African country and came to the US on a DV Visa… Donald Trump is probably not my biggest fan haha
Do you apply for this scholarship in your final year at CC?
@CCtoAlaska Yes! Here is the exact phrasing from their website because there is a little bit of wiggle room in there for students taking a gap between CC and Uni:
“Be a current student at an accredited U.S. community college or two-year institution with sophomore status as of January 1, 2019, or a recent graduate (since spring 2014)”
@RainbowBritey , it seems like you stand a great chance winning this scholarship! May I ask what country you’re from, and did you consider taking the SAT/ACT? Has anyone from your college won this scholarship in the past? I’m just wondering if the standardized test score reports increase one’s chances. Please, feel free not to answer if you don’t want to.
@franknetter That is very kind of you to say, thank you. Students from my college have won a few times, I know of two in the past decade or so. I considered taking the SAT but decided against it - I have enough to keep me busy with juggling school, work, parenting and community responsibilities, and I just figured the SAT was probably not that important. I may be wrong though? Have you taken the SAT? Are you applying for the JKCF program in this cycle?
@RainbowBritey , yes I am applying this cycle. I am taking the SAT soon, but obviously it is not for this scholarship, since I already turned in my application. I feel like I should have taken the SAT earlier- I think it helps because there is a section on the application that requires test score reports- and most top schools (especially the Ivy Leagues) that they want us to apply to often recommend turning in a test score report. However, I may be wrong. I think I have a low chance of getting this scholarship considering my GPA is low, but I decided to give it a shot since I have nothing to lose, and just keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.
@franknetter what are your stats? I am sure there are many things beyond GPA that make you a strong candidate for JKCF. A lot of the Ivy Leagues have programs for returning students that don’t require SATs but I am impressed that you’re taking the test anyway. My husband and I spoke about it for a long time but ultimately felt that because we are California CC students we are most likely to end up at one of the (amazing) UC schools and they don’t consider SATs for transfers, it was not worth the investment of time and money for us. That said, the SAT is still recommended for students applying to some of the programs, like Yale’s Eli Whitney, so we will definitely be at a disadvantage there.
Did you grow up outside the US or just not take the SAT in high school? How do you feel about your application if you consider it holistically?

Hello JKCF friends, I was trawling last year’s thread looking for a timeline and was so jealous when I saw that semi-finalists were announced in December during their cycle - February feels a long way away right now!
What other scholarships did you all apply for? I applied for foundation scholarships at my college, the Soroptimist scholarship and the PTK scholarships (they just notified their semi-finalists this week - YAY!).
