That moment when you think it’s a good idea to re-read through your application to convince yourself of how awesome you are and you find two glaring grammatical errors. :(( I’m toast.
haha @lifeasaprayer I feel you on that, I always tell myself not to look at anything after I submitted… and recently fd that plan up when I submitted my UCLA Regents application… found 2 grammar errors as well lol.
@Matsilinen : Last year, some recipients received requests for additional information. I don’t remember if it was grades, but there was definitely more financial verification/uploading documents. What was scarier is that sometimes they asked very specific questions on top of everything else: “Why is there a gap between jobs?” “Explain what you did from 2004-2007,” etc. I know of one person who won that did receive a request for updated grades. They had between 30-40 credits at the time of application and a 3.7 GPA (their updated transcript showed a slightly lower GPA, but still within parameters).
Financials/grades were not a mass request; they were only directed toward certain people. Both people who DID and DID NOT receive these requests were among the winners. However, I will say that it does seem they are asking more people this year to specify/update their application with additional documents than last year.
@lifeasaprayer : I had multiple errors in my application, occasionally forgetting to put entire words in. I made the exact same post you just did last year (and it hurt even more because writing was supposed to be my greatest asset). Don’t worry, style and spirit is far more important than a few grammatical errors.
@nekozuki Thank you for the response.
@LostUber @aritransfer16 @Matsilinen I have received a confirmation email from the JKCF that they have received my transcript and my accepted college list. They are saying that they have all the necessary information and will conduct further reviews! And we will definitely hear something within this month.
We still have 27 days in this month. I cannot take this anymore!
@returningstud I know, I know… such a rookie mistake! Haha
@nekozuki Thanks for the reassurance to my overly dramatic woes! Writing is suppose to be my forte as well, so you really get me. I do have style though. And clear eyes. And a full heart. If Coach Taylor has taught me anything, that means I can’t lose. Yeah, I may or may not be binging on Friday Night Lights to pass the time and keep my mind from spinning what ifs…
Hey guys, I introduced myself way back when and then avoided this forum altogether because it was giving me anxiety. Basically checked back in to see if anyone had heard anything recently. Last year one of my classes got to tell @nekozuki during our finals week, so as our finals came and went I started to think that I was out and they (rudely) didn’t even notify me. Haha. Glad to see not all hope is lost. Keep on keepin’ on guys, it’ll happen or it won’t. Also, HI! @nekozuki
@sat4498 Did you ask for this confirmation email or was it just sent to you?
Did you request this confirmation email or was it just sent to you?
I don’t know about you guys, but now that I’ve escaped the black hole, known only as finals, I intend to focus on important things in life…Ya know, like dropping a mixtape… Eating a burrito…
I’d just like to say good luck to everyone and May the 4th be with you.
@XennyX I like your priorities.
@sat4498 Which email did you send you transcript to? the general or to the lady who emailed us?
I didnt recive a conformation email when I sent in my transcript to the lady, so I think its a good thing you got that email.
Everyone,
I know it is incredibly difficult, but I do believe we need to stop speculating about this year’s process and reassuring based upon last year’s process. In regards to the former, the foundation has been incredibly tight lipped about the meaning of each step in this process, so anything that we write could very easily be wrong and causing another semifinalist unnecessary and preemptive grief and/or joy. In regards to the latter, we know that this year is already radically different than last year and they have not been doing things in the same way - like with with these group requests for more information, rather than specific and targeted questions (which I got back in January because there was something wrong with my application - long story). Look at the College Scholar board (actually, you likely shouldn’t if you are trying to avoid speculation): their scholar(s) similarly made comparisons initially that ended up not being entirely true. The bottom line is that nobody knows who is out. Any one of us could still be under consideration.
I say this with greatest affection for everyone: sincere empathy for other applicants and incredible appreciation for the scholars who have taken so much time to support us through this ( @optimisticky and @nekozuki - regardless of what happens, I am really thankful for your labor). But I know everyone must be in the midst of finals and while I know this will detract from that to some extent, trust me it has for me, it should not entirely. And when it does, you can come here to express your neurotic, obsessive anxiety and we can all be like “yea, me too”. Or, y’know, write out of your speculations if it helps because that is often part of why you are feeling the way you, but let’s try to come back to that support - rather than debating as to if our various theories have merit. “This is awful” or “I’m scared of that too” seems much more healthy than “here is why you should not think that” or “yes - this is totally what you should think”.
I don’t say this to tell anyone what to do or feel. I mean it when I say we should all do what helps us take care of ourselves, so if this is that, then don’t let me tell you to stop. I just know it isn’t working for me and I want to simply say that it’s ok to stop. I’ll be there with you.
Someone else also reminded me of something important: the foundation does not select scholars. A committee formed by the foundation, which is comprised of people from all over, selects scholars. Thus, it is likely that when you call a staff member and ask, they’re not always entirely in the know themselves and might be just as frustrated as you are about the confusion and pace. That doesn’t mean don’t call - they might have the answer to your question - but it does mean there are even people in the foundation that might not know what’s going on or who you are.
@Matsilinen @sat4498 Remember that they have come back from a multi-day meeting. The staff person that we spoke with is likely going through quite a few emails. As the Higher Ed Coordinator, she likely is not only fielding our communication, but I assume must also be in touch with current scholars and new college scholars who are working through their own paperwork. I am sure she will get back to you at some point over the next day or so. More recent emails will probably be answered first.
Thinking of you all, and may the fourth be with you!
@Matsilinen I just replied to the original email for transcript and college list email.
By the way, the official word is that there are 600 semifinalists. I go to school near the JKCF HQ and that’s what I was informed by someone involved. Decisions will come out “early May.”
@Jouuuu That’s a fascinatingly high number, esp. since they continually quoted 300-400 to nearly all of us initially. That’s about 26% of the applicant pool - still an amazing accomplishment to have made it this far.
Regardless as to if it was 400 or 600 initially, it’s no matter at this point. We know that there are no longer 400 - 600 semifinalists under review - there is no way to move from that number to 85 in a week or two, unless they don’t sleep (which I hope they do) - though we don’t know who is in what position. I do, however, hope that this person is correct about the early May estimate. That is what the staff member said, as well. I am just looking forward to this coaster coming to an end.
I assume some of you are feeling the same?
@aritransfer16 I want to feel like you. But according to the last email reply, if they really take one more month, then I think 600 is still a doable number. And in that case every semi-finalist is still under consideration.
Hey everyone. Can we give ourselves a challenge. How about talking about everything except jkc on the forum for one day? Starting tommorow?
The forum is about the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship… If you don’t have the self control to just not look at the forum, you’re in bad shape.
