Woops sorry guys, I misread the email They said they’ll get back to me soon Sorry if i got anyone’s hopes up or down. sigh I really need to stop skimming emails. I do apologize again if anyone had gotten their hopes up or down. This is just very stressful for all of us. The wait is honestly killer
@sat4498 I asked her this question, and she said “We will be notified, I think.” It wasn’t entirely clear, but it was clear that someone will hear confirmations tomorrow.
Ugh. Another top school rejected me and another will be releasing decisions at 4 EST - and I doubt that will be good. Because I know I won’t win JKCF this is moot, but if I hypothetically do I am going to be bummed about the fact I wouldn’t be able to use it at any of the schools I really wanted to. I can’t afford to take a semester off to try again and every school I have asked has said that admissions decisions are final with no chance for reconsideration.
As I said, it will be fine - I have places I will be happy at - but I am really bummed.
If I remember correctly from the forum last year, several applicants felt they had no chance. I recall one recipient in particular that was rejected by several schools and even got in a really bad car accident close to finals.
If it is meant for you, trust me, you will not be overlooked… sounds like to me you need this just as much, if not more, than most of us. Give it a little more time. Hang in there. @aritransfer16
i hadn’t applied to any schools until after i found out about the award, months after most deadlines had expired. i had to really haggle. but it can be done. we are intelligent, resourceful, persuasive people. we represent some of the top performing students in the nation. dusts shoulder arrogantly
The fact that it’s taking this long gives me hope that they actually are considering our apps. At this point, it’s pointless to not notify unless someone’s on vacation lol. Maybe they need to set up reps to deal with schools? I don’t know… But can’t think of a good reason for it to be this long, if anyone can pls lmk
@RlyOwl I thought the Saturday notification was odd, as well, but that is definitely what she was told.
@LostUber The college waited listed me! That seems like an odd outcome to be so excited about it, but it at least offers some hope. And there is still one more that will notify me of an admissions decision in June. (As in, there is an institution further behind than JKC. )
But seriously. Thank you for your kind words. I feel as if it sounds cheesy when I say that to people, but I could not be more sincere. I had no expectation of making it this far in the process or of being noticed at all by top schools when I started this whole march back in December - my GPA barely passes muster among this group and, though I have dedicated a lot of my heart to advocacy work (it’s the reason I do any of what I do), I haven’t held international officer positions (wasn’t even inducted yet into PTK when I applied) or started a nonprofit. Though I let myself fancy hope on occasion, mainly I’m just really complimented to have been regarded by the foundation as one of the top students in such a large pool.
You all are awesome. Thank you for helping me stay sane.
@optimisticky You gotta tell me about pestering UChicago if I get it. They wouldn’t admit me even with the scholarship, but that’s gotta be interesting.
@aritransfer16 What type of advocacy work do you do? I do so on the local level when it comes to giving the “youngins” perspective. Most of the work I’m doing right now is on education, criminal justice reform (ending the school-to-prison pipeline), and campaign finance reform. You may have already figured by my profile pic, I’m a huge politics/civic engagement advocate.
Hey guys, my advisor just called me. I am officially a Cooke scholar. She recived the email at 11:00 am today. I just wanted you to be the first to know. Couple of details, I am the only one from my school so far. I recived both emails from JKCF and it was my school advisor who contacted me first.
@Matsilinenreluctantly congratulates, waiting for Ashton Kutcher to pop out and scream YOU GOT PUNK’D
Seriously though, grats on winning (hopefully this is accurate, I’m not even in the running and my heart can’t take these false alarms). Your life is about to change You should be so unbelievably proud.
I am a community organizer and education/outreach activist. (For a disclaimer, I am fundamentally anti-capitalist and otherwise radical/non-reformist, so while I have done and continue to do what is more typically considered political work, I frame that strictly as harm reduction.)
My primary focuses at the moment are:
LGBTQ activism
I have done this at the campus, local, and national levels. Previously, this meant working on grassroots cause/political campaigns, but also involved nonprofit work, protest work, education work, and outreach and case management. Thinking of civic engagement, my favorite part of working cause campaigns was organizing phonebanks, because so often our volunteers, after getting a voter to connect with their rep., would tell me they had for so long felt powerless in politics but finally felt as if they could actually do something and make a difference. It remains one of the most meaningful experiences that I have had.
Reproductive justice
Previously, I did work some grassroots/cause political campaigns; however, I now work with an org. in Chicago that focuses on youth empowerment and voice, primarily through youth-adult ally taught comprehensive sex ed workshops, advocacy days with politicians, and other work around the city.
Educational equity
--- This has primary occurred on campus, but I have spent a lot of time at my school trying to make the space more accessible for various groups. It's an odd CC district - historically quite wealthy, but rapidly undergoing economic, identity, racial/ethnic, and other demographic changes. This has spanned working with my Honors program to do more targeted outreach to underrepresented groups to emailing admins. excessively until they created a preferred name policy for trans students, as well as doing trans 101 training on campus. I have started taking some of this work outside campus.
Restorative justice
---- I work with middle schoolers. It is the only just thing to do.
I would love to hear about your own work, too! Youth advocacy/youth CJ reform is something I am super, super passionate about and it intersects with about everything. What are some of the things you’ve done specifically?
@Matsilinen Woah! You posted while I was posting. Congratulations, many times over! (Assuming this is accurate). And thank you for updating us. My cat is sending you all her love.
Note to everyone else: I expressed strong preference to my adviser not to surprise me. Just tell me when she knows, either way - I don’t want to wait until Monday or be weirded out. Doing so might be a good idea if that’s your preference, too.
