@kb199977 How are YOU doing? I have been sad that this thread has been taking a nap so it is nice to see some activity!
My semester is going super well, I am taking classes I love and trying to really engage with everything I love about my campus while I am still there. I am taking a political science class that is focused on the supreme court and the constitution and I am finding that totally fascinating, I am also taking two English lit classes and a meditation class for the extra unit I needed to maintain my current scholarship funding, the balance of classes has been wonderful.
Most of the PTK Academic team results are out by now - did anyone else apply for PTK scholarships? I haven’t yet heard of any Hites or Guistwhite winners so I am looking forward to seeing who wins those - I love looking at what other CC students are achieving and focusing on and these are often a good resource for finding people who are doing interesting things.
I’m doing ok, I’m losing a lot of motivation for school and have been moving pretty slow. Still maintaining high grades, just less enthusiastic. I’ve had too much on my plate for the last 6 months so I think it’s taking a toll on me. I feel like something is missing… and I feel like what’s missing is me applying my knowledge to help solve real-life problems and just experiencing the world. I’ve been stuck in the classroom, in the books, and in the laptop for TOO long and I’m starting to hate it lol. I wish college acceptances would come in already so I can find a reason to keep pushing strong! Everyone who is reading this, let us know here if you win JKCF! Rooting for all of you. Also let us know of college acceptances!
@RainbowBritey I was told by my advisor that coco cola, oberndorf and guistwhite where announced. I am a semifinalist for All USA so I am waiting patiently for those winners to be announced. Which one were you a semifinalist for?
I had the opportunity to speak with students on my campus who won the JCK scholarship in past years. I just want to say I take everything with a grain of salt at this point, but I did hear some what of promising news. I was told that people in the past who have applied for the scholarship on my campus have had interviews and still not won the scholarship. They agreed with me that the foundation is very vague but to not lose hope because they are also pretty unpredictable. I myself had began to lose hope after reading this thread but this may have given me a change of heart. At the same time I don’t want to get my hopes up again, but I’m trying to remain positive. I was also told that the person who one on my campus last year never got an email for additional information or an interview. We have a few weeks left… lets all hang in there!!
@kb199977@RainbowBritey
Totally agree about the thread slowing down, I personally went on the facebook semis page as well to fuel that urge trying to hear from the rest of you guys.
As for the semester it has been kinda of rough and have the same feeling @kb199977 is going through. Took on 20 credits and while previous of that did 19 I did not feel the same pressure/ boredom? Luckily, I found an online transfer buddy I can rant to all the time and vice versa and it has helped a lot. Sort of like the pressure though to get a taste of what the next stop will be like at university. The boredom is the only issue dealing with required classes out of your interest.
@Kmag22 Its never true. This is the first time they doing interviews to make sure that people who will be selected are really applying for colleges. I was told its been instances where students were awarded scholarship and realize they didn’t apply to no selective schools. The purpose is to make sure you get into a top school and utilize the scholarship not a state school which will already give you an in-state tuition and financial aid. Just be hopeful that’s all. If didn’t ask for additional information mean they ok with your application. Most of the winners don’t even stress about the outcome. You’ve done whatever you need to do at this point. Just go ahead with your regular life. This scholarship is not a measurement of how much greatness you will become in the future. I’m rooting for everyone’s future. Good luck with your applications.
@kb199977 highly doubt it as the foundation said mid April to many applicants after the interviews. So maybe early april at most but don’t think anything before april. Similar to last year perhaps where only one person found out a bit earlier and I cannot recall his exact day. It was @AGoodFloridian
They first announce to the college reps to enable them surprise their scholars. Some times they send previous scholars as reps to surprise students depends if they current or graduated. After that process before they do official press release and send emails along. They should be doing the surprises late this month or early next month before the final press release.
@Kmag22 Lynn Tincher-Ladner from PTK shared the All USA winners on Facebook last week so those results are certainly out, and I have seen a handful of colleges publicizing their Coca Cola winners as well. I think Hites is typically the last of the PTK scholarships to emerge, usually in late May and sometimes as far out as June. Did you make your state academic team?
On the interview thing - my interviewer told me that this was the first year they had interviewed candidates, and that results would come out in mid-April.
What colleges did everyone apply to and, at this stage - what decision (beyond Cooke, of course!) are you most looking forward to? I am really excited for Swarthmore, Brown, and Berkeley results, although I’m not at all confident about getting into any of them haha!
@RainbowBritey
I’m looking forward to getting all of my decisions. I applied to Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, UCLA, UCB, Northwestern, and Cornell. I’m not expecting to get into any, but you never know! Other than that, I hope you get into your schools!
@RainbowBritey honestly with your stats and making the semis and rooting for you to be a finalist I’m sure you’ll do greatly. Especially at Swarthmore even more likely.
Personally, really excited for what’s to come as I’m legitimately excited to attend any of the schools I applied to. That being said after digging further, USC is my #1 at the moment with Cornell at #2. Major/ location seems amazing even though not too fan of the greek/ sports aspect.
Everyone else, what are you doing to stay busy and keep your minds away from all the decisions inbound soon?
@Snekfest
I hope you get into USC! Honestly, It’s an amazing school and LA is amazing overall. I really don’t want to leave LA! I think you’d love it.
What am I doing to keep my mind away from decisions? I’m making new goals for the next two years and sort of mapping out my road to grad school now. I like to plan early and it is A LOT of planning, so the days kinda pass by fast. I also hit the gym a lot so that kinda makes the days pass by fast.
hey guys!! it’s good to see people being more active on here lately. i have a question about financial aid at schools and i wondered if any of you have any insight into how that works… do schools review all financial aid they get?? or only the apps for ppl they accept?
bc one of the schools i submitted an application to on march 1 contacted me about some missing financial aid documents and i’m wondering if that’s a good sign? since decisions are supposed to come out by april 15
@Snekfest Thank you! Encouragement is a marvelous thing. I am keeping busy by getting super involved in my classes, presenting research, enjoying the admissions decisions and scholarship results as they come out, and working a whole lot. I hope you get into USC, I haven’t looked at their stats but I have a couple of friends and former classmates who have transferred into USC so it seems within reach! They also seem really happy with their choice, which is always a good indicator.
@glassturtle I am certainly no expert but I believe most schools process applications and financial aid simultaneously but in different departments. Need-aware schools are certainly evaluating financial need before admitting students as the student’s financial situation contributes to the admission decision. That said, take any positive signs you can find - whatever keeps you going in this marvelously mysterious period.
At some (most?) need-aware schools this process starts when the financial aid budget is depleted. It makes the process simple: Need blind until the money is gone, then full pay only. It helps schools get the most kids they want the most.
what about need-blind schools? the school that emailed me about my missing documents is need-blind… would they just process my financials in tandem with admissions or after the decision had been made?
