Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship Applicants 2019-2020

@defaultstudent1 My husband and I both got that one, I had previously received the updated info request while he had (and indeed has) not. The foundation has not said that the further info email indicates anything beyond their desire to attain further info, we are all still semi-finalists.

@ARousseau Thank you for the helpful information. Do you know if everyone received the second email around the same time ?

Good day CC friends, just finished reading last year’s JKC thread and thought I’d join you all on the fun!

University Picks - Cornell (Dream, highly doubt it happening), UMich (Have priority admission), USC, some other impossible reaches

GPA - 4.0

Essays - Really not a clue, I don’t consider myself a good writer but I honestly gave it my all.

Teacher recs - No clue honestly. Picked an awesome math prof who changed the way I viewed mathematics and another instructor I really connected during the course.

NOTE: For those just watching from a distance, come join the fun early! Even if you don’t think you stand a chance just the friendships and connections from this thread alone might be worth the ride.

Besides the stats: Already received the email for the JKC form and the email from Cornell. Which freaked me out as if you couldn’t tell is my dream destination.

Wishing everyone here the best of luck and hope to see you all thrive and prosper <3

@FinishingTheApp and others upset about the follow up email, please hold on. Just the fact you made it this far proves you are amazing individuals and I’m sure you already know that. Wait until the dust settles and decisions are official out than looking for patterns <3 Especially App, reading your posts from last year.

@RainbowBritey Thank you for carrying the torch from @AGoodFloridian, both amazing individuals hope to join you both in the JKC family!

@Snekfest It is wonderful to have you here! What are you studying and what excites you about your chosen field?

@Kmag22 From what I’m finding, the second e-mail is a myth; I wouldn’t worry about the second e-mail. My goal for this thread is, after we hear about people getting accepted, we make it CRYSTAL CLEAR to everyone who reads this post in the future that the second e-mail isn’t required.

From what I can gather, a portion of those e-mails are literally because people didn’t input their financial information correctly the first time.

@Snekfest I too received an e-mail from Cornell, and it said it was because they got my name from the JCKF list.

I’ve been researching this, as well, and people who haven’t made semi-finalist get this e-mail. This isn’t to discourage you! This is information for those reading later. There’s a lot of misconceptions as to what these e-mails mean, and people who don’t have a lot of experience or knowledge about college need to know that THESE E-MAILS ARE NOT RECRUITMENT. A lot of these places, to keep their acceptance rates low, employ this tactic. It’s sad, but true. That’s why a lot of people get these e-mails after taking the ACT/SAT.

Hi everyone, I saw the call to join and so I here I am (after having checked this thread literally every day since the notification day haha)!! I am a semifinalist, as well, and I have not received the second email asking for more information. Very much looking forward to officially getting that cleared up (if not for our benefit, then for posterity lol).

Also, I have a question about the “portal” some of you have spoken of. I signed up on the application page of the JKC website after I submitted through the Common App, but there’s really nothing on there except for a dashboard page and account settings. Is there any way to link my application to that so I can view any updates? Or will everything be communicated through email this year?

Thank you to everyone in this thread for being so positive and helpful, and I’m glad to finally be joining the discussion!!

@RainbowBritey Something CS and some flavor. So not exactly CS but something close by with an end goal of data analysis. I love working with python and data in general. Already have an internship set for the summer in my field so very excited!

@ARousseau Definitely agreed, not counting on it to be honest. And like I said with all honesty Cornell is beyond an extreme reach so not betting on anything but it was just so nice to get that email as I’m sure other cornell applicants found the same feeling.

@glassturtle welcome! Really the email situations makes sense in regards to what @ARousseau mentioned, might be just a clarification thing. Wishing you luck!

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for not introducing myself prior. I jumped on here in a panic yesterday after finding out that other semifinalists on my campus received an email asking for additional information. So for a formal introduction, I will include my stats below.

GPA - 3.98

Essays - I have to say I feel my essay may have been my strongest point in the application. I worked very hard on it and included a lot of personal information that was life-changing for me.

Teacher recs - I had two teacher recs one from my favorite Psychology professor as Psychology is my major and another from my History professor who is all the advisor at a club I am part of.

I was hopeful about my application from the start and tried to stay positive. When I received the email as a semi-finalist I pretty much had a mini heart attack in my car. LOL … A few days later after speaking with my advisor, she explained what an accomplishment it was to be a semi-finalist but to act like I still don’t have a chance at winning just to prepare myself for the worst.

Anyway… I ended up calling the foundation today to try and clear up what I do in fact think is a myth. I told the rep I was concerned about not receiving this second email and asked if that meant that I was no longer qualified for the scholarship. He said that not receiving this second email did not change my chances of winning and that I was still in the running. However, I did not provide him with any of my information and after he said that he then told me I could email the foundation to clarify for sure but he was “pretty sure” that it didn’t change my chances at winning the scholarship.

From what I have thought about and these are just my thoughts… I do think it has something to do with missing information and possibly parent information which is also why I think I may not have needed this email. I am over the age of 25 years old and because of that my parent’s information was not needed while filling out the application. It is all my information and based off of my income due to age. I wasn’t sure what a CSS profile was but when I looked more into it … it seems to want a lot of information about parents incomes, retirement plans, etc. I could be completely wrong but just a thought.

I do agree that once we find out the truth about the second email we should make it a point to make it CRYSTAL CLEAR for future candidates. This stress is not fun !!

I am grateful for this thread to help me through the next couple of months and will check in with any updates that I receive or hear of.

Good luck to everyone !! I will be praying for all of us

@Snekfest I seriously think you can get into Cornell, so I won’t be surprised to hear of your acceptance. That isn’t me being fake, either.

Also, I’ve emailed JKCF about the second e-mail. I’ll let you know what they say! I was very clear with the problem and my intent on using the information for clarification purposes for everyone now AND in the future. I think their response will be very telling, so, let’s wait and see!

@glassturtle @Kmag22 and everyone else starting to pop up on this thread: welcome! It’s nice to see more activity! I hope more people read this and start to post!

@Snekfest I wish I really understood what data analysis was, I am happy that its a thing you love though  I hope you get into the program you’re keen on at Cornell, they have a reasonably high (for Ivies anyway) transfer acceptance rate and seem to genuinely welcome non-traditional and transfer students, it seems like a pretty fantastic place to study. I’d say if you made the JKCF semi-finalist list you have a pretty solid shot at the school of your dreams.

PS. I am so glad that this thread is alive now! Welcome @glassturtle and @Kmag22 and other new faces.

Just got email from Yale about JKCF, anyone here also applying as a Eli Whitney Scholar?

@defaultstudent1 Yes! My husband and I have almost completed our Whitney applications. I’m no Joyce Maynard but I am really happy that Yale has a program for non-traditional students so I will gladly take the opportunity to apply  I take it you’re applying too?

@defaultstudent1 I got that e-mail! But I’ve decided to apply for their regular transfer application and not through Eli Whitney. Eli Whitney doesn’t give you the same financial aid, so that’s the reason I’m not choosing it. Yale is the only college with my exact major, so it’s my number one!

Speaking of majors: there are a lot of GPAs on here with no mention of major! What are you all planning to study? I’m a mathematics and philosophy major. I’ll have my A.S. in Mathematics before transfer. Will anyone here get an AA or AS before transferring?

@defaultstudent1 I got the Yale E-mail about the Eli Whitney program as well. If you don’t mind me asking what is your age … I found it interesting that they knew I was a non traditional student considering I am 26 years old … I’m asuing the did more they just look at the press release letter and actually looked into the students a bit.

@ARousseau Do you know if you’re able to apply for both programs ? Also have you heard back on anything you sent to the foundation about the the second email… I envy your Mathermatics degree as that is where I struggle a bit. I am going to be grduating in may with an AA.LA in Psychology.
