I just thought I'd start a thread about jackson, just cause.
So who all is going to be one of my geoscience buddies next year?

i applied there, 2nd choice... i hope i get in

Got in as second choice. Honestly don't know much about the school in detail, but it is nationally ranked. I plan on focusing on environmental science and sustainability, but definitely might change my mind.

haha yeah it was sort of my second choice
i originally applied architecture, but acouple days before i found out if i got that major or not i decided to switch into geosciences cause my brother said it was cool
Two days after switching i was accepted w/ a scholarship lol

yeah i went to visit the school last week, it's really cool
geosciences goes on a lot of field trips, like summer of freshman year they have this 6 week trip up to like montana or something i can't remember and that's when everything you learn for geosciences "comes together"

one of the alumni's that contacted me told me environmental science and sustainability is really boring and you get stuck with a monotonous job

I'm planning on doing geosystem engineering and hydrogeology, the jackson advisor said you should pretty much know what you want to do within a few weeks of classes

I was going to apply for architecture too actually, but got pretty discouraged about getting in so just didn't try. Kinda pathetic reasoning. But I'm interested in sustainable design/building so that's why I'm leaning towards that. I've heard the exact same thing about it being boring, but I guess I'll find out if that's the case for me.
Ha, my brother who's in his sixth year at ut (but not in geosciences) told me that every geosciences student he's ever met is always willing to party and genuinely nice. Hope that holds true.
The advisor really said you should know what you want to study in just a few weeks? I hope that's not the case, I really don't see myself deciding that quickly...

oh man i meant summer of junior year for the field trip not freshman my bad
that's tight! maybe we both have the same mind set cause we wanted to be architects
haha maybe i heard wrong? he told me people figure out pretty quick though haha
lol its UT, plently of people are always up for parties!
so i'll be meeting you during the student orientation field trip, where are you from?

I thought that freshman year you only take the basic academics and don't start the major itself, or pretty much any major, until sophomore year.

well yeah but you will be taking geo 303 and 416 freshman year
