anyone else applying?
It seems like this program favors/is aimed at minorities more, if you look at the pictures of previous years students you see like >85% (a) female (b) URM or © both. And the website encourages minorities to apply. I’d feel pretty uncomfortable with that great of a change in demographics from what I’m used to, not saying that’s a bad thing, but it’s something that makes me hesitant to apply.
I’m applying! What fields/campus are you guys applying for?
I have a stronger preference for the Maine campus, but would not mind going to CT at all! what about you guys
Are you guys putting anything for lab/mentor choices?
I have a slight preference towards CT campus because of their focus on Genomics but then again the Maine campus has more information on aging. Either campus would be amazing. I put down three mentors, mentors that focused on genomics and aging-- I’ll probably start my essay about that
I still have to start my essays…
Hi everyone! I attended the program at the Connecticut location last year (as a rising senior in HS), and I’d be happy to answer any questions.
Just to dispel some rumors, during my year, the ratio of male:female was around 1.25:1, and the program was definitely not composed on URM – most of the people my year were white, at least in CT. So worrying about demographics is pretty much a null issue. This program was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had – both research and friendship-wise.
In my previous statement, I didn’t mean to imply that the program favors white males. In fact, all of the high schoolers were people of color. However, I do think that the people chosen to attend are a fair representation of the demographics that apply, racially, age-wise, and geographically.
For a little more info on the selection process: I know that the Education department does an initial screening, then sends selected candidates to specific labs that match their interests. The labs then choose one candidate from their pile. I know people in the past have complained about inconsistent notification dates; that is because the labs respond to Education at different times. CT takes ~11 people, and Maine takes ~36.
how competitive is this compared to other programs? can somebody compare? (instead of just “highly competitive” or other such general indicators)
Last year, the pamphlet at the final symposium said that there were 946 applicants for ~42 spots. However, the education dep head later told me the acceptance rate for just high schoolers was >2%.
GREENLIME what were your stats that got you accepted?

I’m applying. My stats aren’t great and I have no idea if my essays are good, but we’ll see. And I have no background in research. And I haven’t officially taken AP Bio. Woohoo.
Can someone give me feedback on my essays I could do the same for yours?
Guys, are they super strict about the 3000 character limit, do you think? I’m 200 characters over…
Also, should I put my weighted GPA out of 4.0? Or just put my unweighted…
