Does anybody know when IU Jacobs School of Music will notify students of their studio assignment, particularly in piano? It is very hard to make a commitment if the teacher is unknown.
@Apso555, unless things have changed in the last 2 years or is different for piano, Jacobs does not make studio assignments. It is up to each student to contact a teacher and ask if the teacher will take them into his/her studio. I would suggest doing this ASAP as studios fill up at this time of year.
I believe the above is correct too - my experience is from over 4 years ago.
There was a grad student (VP - a mutual friend from our city) that started in the fall with no studio assignment. He was a pretty laid back guy. His mom contacted me in a panic in the summer. I told her to have him contact the head of the voice dept as a starting point since he did not have a teacher in mind. From my understanding, she worked with him and the staff to find a good match in the first week or so that he arrived. He has done very well there.
If you know a teacher, contact him/her. The teachers may also make a recommendation if their studio is full. Or go to the head of the piano dept. All info on faculty is on the Jacobs website.
Thank you both!
@bridgenail Does this advice apply to music Ed majors as well?
I think so. Your D will need a studio assignment. I can give you the name of the VP dept head (or check the website whichever is comfortable to you). She is super nice and helpful. I would not hesitate to email her with any questions/concerns. I think quite a few kids do enter without studio assignments but that can be a hassle - unless you have some assurance from the head of the dept on how it works. As I said I know students who have done it and have done perfectly fine. My D did have an assignment. Feel free to PM me with any questions. My D still knows students and teachers there.
btw - out of my D’s close friend group, 2 were VP Music Ed majors. All VP students hang around together. They really enjoyed it.
Thank you @bridgenail! Will PM you.
