<p>When are those recipients notified, January? When is the weekend when they are brought to Scripps? I applied RD but if I find out about JESS, I'll know about my acceptance early, right?</p>
<p>I'm just curious as to how it all works. I've heard that the weekend is usually mid-February, and I'm scared I might have a conflict. Would I be denied that scholarship due to the conflict? (I'm pretty sure that's not how it would work, but I would love a chance to visit Scripps without paying for the expensive airfair myself.)</p>

<p>As a tour guide, I gave a few private tours to JESS finalists who weren't able to make the weekend. As far as I could tell, the school was very accommodating. I assumed that Scripps still covered airfare, as it really seemed like they wanted to meet the students + let the students visit despite any scheduling conflicts. The last part is only an assumption, though...definitely unverified. For what it's worth, I've really heard wonderful things about student reactions to JESS weekend, so if you are invited and are able to work around your conflict, it might really be worth it.</p>
<p>Don't know notification details, though the JESS webpage says that invitations to the finalist weekend go out in mid-Jan. You should find out about acceptance relatively early + you won't be denied the scholarship due to a scheduling conflict. Worry not :)</p>
<p>My understanding is that you will not receive an official acceptance. I believe it is because of the Restricted early action programs, like the one at Stanford, in which you cannot apply to other colleges early unless it is for scholarship purposes, but not for admission. This allows girls to apply for the JESS and also apply Early Action to Stanford.</p>

For Fall 2006, merit scholarship applicants started getting their letters around Jan 9th, 2006 and JES weekend started Feb 9th.</p>
<p>For Fall 2007, merit scholarship applicants started getting their letters around Jan 8th, 2007 and JES weekend started Feb 8th.</p>
<p>For Fall 2008, merit scholarship applicants started getting their letters around Jan 10th, 2008 and JES weekend started Feb 9th.</p>
<p>So for Fall 2009, merit scholarship applicants might start getting their letters around Jan 8th, 2009 and my guess is JES weekend Feb 7th. They usually have it the weekend before Family Weekend for current students and that is Feb 14-16, 2009.</p>
<p>I'm sure if you think you might have scheduling conflicts you could call admissions and see what weekend they are planning to have it.</p>
<p>If someone calls admissions around Jan 6th or so, they might say if the notification letters have been mailed or when they will be mailed.</p>
<p>An invitation to the JESS scholars weekend is not a guaranteed acceptance. They made that pretty clear last year to all of us that came to visit. Obviously it's a sign that you're qualified enough to be admitted, but it means you have to be on your best behavior on the weekend.
And it's a really fun weekend, so if it's at all possible for you to make it, you should really try. It's a great way to learn about the colleges, and get a feel for the caliber of girls you'll meet and be working with while you're in school.</p>
<p>And I didn't get my JESS letter last year until about mid-January.</p>
<p>D received an email today inviting her to the 2009 scholarship weekend in February. She is over the moon, and looking forward to meeting the other invitees. They are basically paying everything for the weekend of "packed" activities. Good luck to all others who applied for the scholarship.</p>
<p>I got an email/phone call too!!!!!! I'm reallly excited...it hasn't been the greatest college admissions experience for me so far- I got deferred from my EA school and didn't apply anywhere rolling, so I'm pretty much the only one of my friends who hasn't been accepted anywhere. I have like a 3.7 UW, 3.9 W, but high standardized testing (2340 single sitting), pretty extensive extracurriculars and I'm a URM.</p>
<p>Well, you'll be interviewed by a professor, and it's not always a professor in the department you want to go into. Sometimes they just match you up with whoever, depending on the availability. My interview, and everyone I talked to, had very informal experiences that were more akin to a conversation than an interview. I would suggest having a few ideas of things to talk about, like about last summer, this summers plans, or a hobby/art that you love. You might want to also come with a few questions because they serve as really good icebreakers. Maybe ask the professor what they consider one Scripps best qualities, or for their observation about Scripps students. Don't worry!!! But if you get super nervous anyway, don't be afraid to admit that to them, because that can be a good icebreaker too. The professor will usually have a list of questions to ask as well.</p>
<p>D got home from the scholars weekend and had a great time. She said she did not meet anyone that she didn't like, and that there were about 112 gals from all over the country at Scripps for the weekend. She really thinks Scripps gals are great, so thanks to all the hosts, admissions peeps and other scholarship hopefuls for such a great experience.</p>
