I have been offered to be a James Scholar and am debating whether or not to accept the offer. Does any one have any details on the required LAS 122 class? And I heard that as a James Scholar you get to live in Nugent due to the learning community for it- can someone confirm this and tell me if its a pretty chill community. Also, pros and cons of being a James Scholar? Thanks!
There is an LLC in Nugent for honors students, but not everyone gets accepted (also Nugent is expensive, albeit very nice)
Pros: get to register for classes earlier
Cons: need to take honors classes or get a minor/double major (not really a con but can make scheduling a little awkward)
James Scholar doesn’t really mean much but you do get a nifty early timeslot for selecting classes, you might as well accept.
(1) I took LAS 122 last year. It’s a very simple course that is only 1 credit hour (meets once a week). Upperclassmen teach it, and you just learn about University procedures and other essentials for new students in the LAS honors track.
(2) I currently live in the Honors LLC. James Scholars are NOT guaranteed spots in Nugent (for that matter, no one is). There’s way more James Scholars than there are spots in the community. However, if you do get admitted to live there, I highly suggest that you do so. The experience there is what you make of it, but I’ve found a great group of friends that I really enjoy hanging with.
