How should I start preparing? I haven't really started yet...

Probably after the holidays would be a good time to start. Take this next week off and relax because then the hard work begins after that. Make it a new years resolution to get a 2400, thats what I'm doing.

Good luck :)

How long do you guys study for the SAT's, and how often a week? (4 times a week for 3 hours? , or more specific like 4 times during the week for 2 hours and 1 time during the weekend for 5 hours?)

I plan to do 2 hours for 4 days a week and 3 hours on the weekend for 3 weeks. That too little/too much/just right? I got a 1950 after taking it once without any study.

I'm taking them in January, too! I'm not actually that nervous, because this is my first time taking them, and it's essentially a practice one for me. But how should I prepare for the essay? Should I actually practice and write a few? Argh...so much self discipline. I know I'm going to do poorly anyway. I just can't get the hang of the essay. Every time I see the prompt, I blank out. I have a limited supply of knowledge to offer for support. I think I'll probably end up going to desperate measures and make up info...that's what my English teacher told us to do when we don't have anything to write about.

wow! seems like everyone is asking questions in this thread!
dsarah---I would go w/ solsek's plan too.
solsek---how much did u score? if u r targeting for 2400 (in fact that needs a lot of luck) that might not be enough! U've to pray a lot too! (lol:-) Well, if u get sth like 2100, then u might make 2300 as long as u practice and review the right stuffs.
Xcotter---practice some TIMED essay from Blue Book, that'll be really helpful. I got a 9 (I really messed up that day) I was blanked out too, just becoz I always thoughts essay is sth I am simply awesome at. So, do some practice and never disregard this part. 'make up info' works. Since I am having AP Euro this semester, it has really helped me out! <smile></smile>

XCotter-just keep two or three examples (historical, literary, current events) in the back of your head that you remember very clearly and that are usable for any topic. I always use World War II/Hitler&Nazis and The Great Gatsby just in case if I am unable to think of more inventive examples.

What anisha08 said is exactly what I do. Have what you are doing in class fresh in your mind. Sometimes what you do in history/economics/english will aid in examples for the essay.

i use the same SAME 3 examples for all sat essays.... and i know famous quotes.. so i throw one of those in the intro and manipulate it a bit.....

Hitler.... this is the one thing that you actually did that benefits society....... (great examples for sat essays)

How difficult is it to get a 12 on the SAT essay? I've heard opinions ranging from "Oh, it's simple" to "OMG, hardest thing to do EVER".

the SAT essay if VERY formulaic. go to sparknotes.com and read their advice, its pretty much how the essay is to be structured. and remember to fill the two pages if you want a shot at a 10-12. and no, its not difficult to get a 12 on the SAT essay. just follow the format, and use some sophisticated diction, and u get it. I got a 9 on the june sat and a 12 on the november sat.
