which jansport backpack is suitable for a college freshman, the super break one (1500 cu in), wasabi or big student? Any other suggestions would be helpful.

F jansport it's all about targus...less than half the price and way more durable

The North Face makes the best back packs in my opinion.

I've had my red Jansport bag since freshman year of high school and it's still very durable and comfortable. I'm starting my sophomore year of college next week, so through 5 years of school + airplane travel + road trips + the bag I wear when I ski = it's a pretty sweet bag to have. No idea what style it is, but it's enough to hold all my stuff :)

Personally, Jansport was great for high school, but for college, I'd seriously recommend getting a Brenthaven. They're perfect if you need to safely bring your laptop (lots of protection) and a ton of textbooks to class everyday. Mine's (Expandable Trek) made out of ballistic nylon, and they all come with lifetime guarantee.

I got a Jansport messenger bag last summer. It was great for carrying books and has a padded compartment for my laptop.

I would have to second the Swiss Gear. Amazingly solid!

Top notch book/laptop protection for top notch students! :)

A third vote for Swiss Gear. I actually got a really good deal on mine. There is a lot of space and great protection for the laptop. Also my model allows you to place your MP3 player in the bag and hook it up so you don't have to worry about it scratching in your pocket.

yeah jansport is highschooly, esp the ones with the ugly leather bottoms

^I have one (the Right Pack), and so far has withstood all the abuse I've put it through. IMO, they're the classic backpack with amazing durability.

The Swiss Gear also has a knife pocket.

When I saw that I was shocked! Looks like it's going to be used for another pencil pocket...

are one-strapped messengers bags really worse for your back than the regular two-strapped backpacks?

I would recommend a hiking type pack (not a big pack for camping), one with padded straps to help with comfort when carry three heavy textbooks. Jansport makes nice ones.

Swiss Gear has only lasted a year for me (I've already been through 2). This year I bought a Targus for my laptop (and the one I got came with a bunch of laptop accessories). I also bought a jansport backpack for hiking and other uses.

I've been using a Jansport Big Student, and have been having problems with the straps pulling out of the bag. They haven't broken off yet, but all the stitching that should be inside the bag is now on the outside.

That said, it's probably the best sized bag I've found thus far (I don't carry my laptop, so the lack of a laptop compartment is no problem for me!) and I'm probably going to end up with another one (It'll be my third in 3 years).

as a college student, would i really need that big of a backpack?

You don't really need a huge backpack, since most classes don't require you to bring your book, and you can always go back to your room if you have breaks between classes. The only reason you would need a semi-big backpack is if you plan on carrying your laptop around. If so, get one that has a built-in laptop compartment. I just got a Swiss Gear backpack, and I love it! I got a really good deal on it too...

Most of my classes do require the book, so that's why I need that big of a bag. I also commute, so I have to carry everything that I need with me, as I don't have time to run home to get stuff through out the day.

yea, i'll be commuting too but don't know yet how many books i'll have.
