yikes…
my first SAT. i just fail at CR/W

@yankeesfanatic

The online grader is pure BS.

Damn. Wish I knew that before. :/

Personal story:
I took the test twice because I had already decided to do it twice and only twice before the beginning of the year (shoutout to my mother here for her influence upon my decision). First time I ‘formally’ took the SAT in November, I got a 2270 (760M, 710CR, 800W with 12 Essay). This time around (January), I got a 2400 (11 on essay). Point being, one can take the risk and hopefully get a better score. I personally took a few more practice tests in between and practiced extra on CR (I sometimes just took CR in a practice test). For most people, their math sections are riddled with silly mistakes. Thus, take the time to look over math problems and redo them from scratch if necessary. I learned this after dropping to the 760 I got the first time around because I had skimmed over the problem and misread the words. Save the arrogance for after the test, not during the actual exam. The writing simply takes some practice–once one recognizes patterns in errors, they are easily spotted. Critical reading can be a hit or miss on both vocabulary and sections. I usually enjoy the passages and read very quickly from years of practice, thankfully, so I don’t struggle with it. The point is to be severely critical–rule out extremes and miswordings/false paraphrases.

As a side note, consider that College Confidential is full of overachieving/grade-obsessed people. I am not stating specifically that I am excluded from all of the accusations. There have only been ~3 people (I may be mistaken having only skimmed the thread) who have openly announced on here about their 2400s. Last year, there were 384 college-bound seniors who achieved the full score (see http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/SAT-Percentile-Ranks-Composite-CR-M-W-2011.pdf), though I am not clear if this is a number that includes international test takers along with US data. Divide 384 by the 7 test dates offered, and the average amount per test comes out to be about 55 people per date. Consequently, the few who announce it on here are a small fraction of the whole number. Moreover, since this site is saturated with intelligent beings, the average scores are abnormally shifted to the right of the scale, making solid scores in the 2100s seem mediocre at best. In addition, one should realize that we are technically anonymous. Thus, take from this knowledge that anyone can say anything within reasonable limits, and others will assume he/she to be correct (perhaps I lie about my score to make everyone feel terrible about their unsatisfactory scores because I’m an evil ■■■■■; one shall never know the truth unless one knows me offline).

All in all, be proud of the score you got (Woohoo! [your name] took the first step! Time to down a milkshake and cookie in celebration!) and in a week or so search in yourself to decide whether it is worth risking time, money, and reputation for a possible 10 point increase. I’m not saying that to scare people away from retaking, but rather to warn those who scored above 2300. Colleges will not be impressed if you increase from a 2320 to a 2350. I empathize with those experiencing the pressures of arrogance (competitive schools do that to students), but unless one feels a burning passion to take a leap and spend extra time resharpening skills, there are extremely few reasons to retake it at this point. For others, figure out why a mistake was made and go from there. Any way you choose, be enthusiastic about it! Ambivalence does not lead to success. :)

Hi guys

The Jan 28th SAT was my first, and I’m not at all pleased with my results. My math and critical reading total was 1330 and my grand total was 1940. I clearly need to improve. I was just wondering if it is possible to raise my math and critical reading score to at least a 1500. I am willing to put in some serious work and pay for a private tutor if need be. Any advice or success stories? I could use some of that ):

Thanks guys!

Math 720
CR 720
WR 670

8 essay (why???)

1440/1600
2110/2400

Should I retake? I’m applying for Ohio State, which does NOT superscore.
I’m pleasantly surprised because I was almost sure I missed 8-9 questions on the Reading when checking CC for speculated answers, which would have put me at a 680… but it turns out I remembered wrong, or CC is wrong…

Got a 770 on SAT subject test Math II.

Got a 1820 on SAT.

Am I in good shape? I am a senior, meaning this is my last.

@ ckpckp your Math II score is respectable…

@chachaseeds

I agree, I got an 8 on my essay too and on every single one of my practices tests, I had been constantly getting 10s and 11s. Additionally, my writing score overall was around 730. I don’t know, and ironically, I thought that this essay was one of my best yet I got an 8.

Don’t know what to say and that lowered my writing score greatly…

@ stephen yea… I also thought I did well on my essay, but apparently now. Anyways, I found this on Wikipedia:
In March 2004, Dr. Les Perelman analyzed 15 scored sample essays contained in the College Board’s ScoreWrite book along with 30 other training samples and found that in over 90% of cases, the essay’s score could be predicted from simply counting the number of words in the essay.[10] Two years later, Dr. Perelman trained high school seniors to write essays that made little sense but contained infrequently used words such as “plethora” and “myriad.” All of the students received scores of “10” or better, which placed the essays in the 92nd percentile or higher.[11]

Yeah, it seems mostly subjective and who knows, two harsh graders could have graded your essay, which could contribute to a low score on the essay.

Ugh… The essay dropped my score 20 points Whatever, I think I’ve got a decent score, and that was my first try…

Is everyone here *****ing genius? My 2230 is worth nothing here…

Haha warsovereign just read chewydog’s post. Once you get over chewydog’s 2400, the advice towards the end is very true–don’t worry. Remember, the people on here (including you) are REALLY REALLY smart. 2230 is a great score. I don’t know where you want to go to college, but that should work just about everywhere.

In other news, now I really want to say that I got 2400 (which I didn’t) now that chewydog pointed out that you can really say whatever the heck you want as your score.

so… I got a 2400

Not…why must the graders hate on my essay? I can’t wait for Feb 21 so I can look at it and make sure that I am not simply remembering it in a rosy light.

Still in shock over my score.
Never in my life did I think I’d do that well.

My essay was 9 or 10 worthy but I ended up getting a 12 somehow. Argument, discussion, and length were all good, but my vocabulary was elementary and I had many factual errors. On the October test I wrote a story about how my brother fought in the Civil War and I got a 12 haha, but that one was very well written despite being completely false.

Got 2300 . Math 790, Reading 740, Writing 770 (MCQ 80/80 Essay 8/12). Any idea how badly the 8 on Essay will affect chances at Top Tier schools like IVy, MIT, Stanford? Should I retake the test?

Guys is this true about colleges looking at your essay?! I got 790 W with 80/80 MCs and a 9 essay, I couldn’t complete the essay on time and left it incomplete. I am happy with my 2300 ( I’m an international, btw), I don’t want to retake, but if colleges are gonna read my essay ( which I think compared to my usual essays was pretty shabby) I’ll take the trouble to go for a second attempt.

Hublidoks, I don’t think you need to retake that.
Idledevil, I think some colleges do look at essays, but I don’t think you should retake the SAT just to improve your essay score.
Both of you have great scores, so congrats!

you all are great, congrats on your scores!

anyway…
Oct 2011 - 2300 (700 M/800W/800CR)
