***January 2016 SAT (US Only) Thread***

@anika839 I think so too I had a lot of problem with reading, especially running out of time with the black matter

@yolomaster98 WAIT what where and when was this i think i completely missed that!!

@yolomaster98 I said inexplicable

Reasoning for some of the controversial/asked questions:

  1. "Average distance hiked" math question with a graph. It says prior to 2:00 pm she had already covered 63 miles. From 2-7pm she covered 237 miles, getting a total of 300 miles covered by 7pm. The graph only shows 2-7 pm, and asks the average speed from 2-7. (237miles)/(5hrs) = 47.4 mph. Those who got 60 calculated the wrong time frame.
  2. "Less steel/plastic vs. more timber" question. The answer is "more timber should be used in future projects". The author actually says there's many reasons why timber should be preferred, and energy efficiency is only one example. If you put "steel/plastic can be used if more energy efficient than timber" you're ignoring the other reasons the author infers.
  3. "Aerodynamic" schism vs. digression vs. flux. Answer is schism. Digression is wrong because it means like an irrelevant tangent to the main discussion. Flux means continuous change. When airplanes were invented, it split (created a schism) in the field of aerodynamics because the invention added the study of "non-flapping wings". The field went two separate ways.
  4. "Marion in NYC" (@Bjklw2a I think you asked this and didn't get an answer) The contrast between the two sections is that the latter section "refers to a memory/experience from his past". Marion didn't show alarm at the speed (he was awed that the car could travel so quickly) but the second section includes a detail about his Volkswagen back home not being able to go 100+ km/hr. The first section only has his observations, not any comparisons with his past.
  5. @Hickey "15 2x x triangle". Answer is 6. If the answer was 5, then the sides of the triangle would be 15 10 5. Any two sides of a triangle need to be greater (not equal to) the third side. 6 is the smallest integer that would work for x.
  6. "-1 < c < b < a < 1" math inequality question. @baryonic (others asked too, I can't tag everyone) Answer is "(a-c)^2 > (b-c)^2". Think of all the subtraction as the distance between the two points. The distance between A and C will always be bigger than the distance between B and C. This holds true when the distances are squared.

I agree with the post above mine.

@tw2017 is the correct answer to the “less steal vs more timber” question one of the bottom letter choices (D or E)? I don’t remember what i said but i remember i was debating b/w B or a lower letter choice

not sure about that timber one. It did say “only” which is a bit extreme. Maybe the author would be open to other solutions such as making steel or whatever more functional and therefore more efficient than wood. Plus I got like 4 of the same letter in a row so I was a bit hesitant lol.

@anika839 I believe the incorrect “use steel only if energy efficient” was the last answer. I’m not sure where the correct answer was, but if it’s between B and D/E, let’s just say it was B

~X( mood

@anika839 I also got incendiary but I guessed on that question. Does anyone know what it is?

Does anyone remember that question about the exotic particles if the statement were true? And the other ones in the dark matter passage, I remember the number of the questions I found difficult were 10 11 and 16, but idk what the questions were.

Anika839 I got that one too

But for the authors tone I put something other than incendiary

oops

speculative

What’d you guys get for the question about the fish length problem? Like, if the fish were 4 inches longer than what tom said it would be, then the actual length would be three times …etc. 8?

Also, what was the answer to the “slip into obscurity” question?

^I’m curious about that question to

what about the question with the hypotenuse that was between root2/10 and root2/5

i disagree i think the answer was a^2 >bc
