***January 2016 SAT (US Only) Thread***

@JuicyMango In actuality, I was referring to the question I had asked you yesterday, not the above post about college admissions. If you could give me a response I would appreciate it.

@goldeagle81616 Oh my bad, I’ve just been so busy with all my AP classes…I hope you understand :). I started with something like a 500 on the CR section, so I had to work my way up. The way I brought my CR score to an 800 (as cliche as this may sound) is by practice. Use only material produced by CB, and take almost every CR section possible until you are missing between 0-2. You can find a lot of past tests at crackSAT btw. When you finish a test, go through your mistakes thoroughly; this means you have to think about WHY you missed something and what you can do NEXT time if you happen to receive a similar question. Go through your thought processes at the time and see what went wrong. Learn to skim and absorb info quickly. Realize that the CR section is actually pretty easy once you acknowledge the fact that there’s always 1 definitively correct answer, and all the other answer choices have something obviously wrong about them. I hope this helps; I’m really busy so I can’t write a super huge response, but if you need more guidance I’d be happy to oblige.

@JuicyMango I understand the AP situation. Thanks for taking the time to respond thoroughly to my question.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
This is an SAT forum, not a chance thread; it you want to be chanced, post in the correct forum.

btw I got a superscore of 710cr 780math 770wr after taking it twice
but I also had a 660cr the second time because of completely terrible luck, will any university consider my 710 a fluke?

hey @juicymango could you share your strategies??? im intrigued im scoring low to high 2300’s on practice and i want to go for the perfect score on this Saturday on the makeup test. Did you go to school on the day before? one of my friends tells me to stay home and take a full test the day before? any CR strategies would also be much appreciated!!!

also any tips to prevent silly mistakes in math??

I got a 2380 on the january sat with minimal practice. I do read a lot, however. One trick I found useful is when you narrow down a hard question down to 2 choices, you need to find the exact line in the passage the refutes one of them. Don’t look for supporting evidence in these situations because you are likely to assume about the passage.

for some, sat is natural and for some, no matter how hard they try, they can never get above a certain score. i will stop here before i start my rant about how sat is so stupid.

@TheEpic2401Man definitely don’t take a full practice test the day before, i didnt and i still got a really good score. its not needed at all, it’ll probably make you more nervous and jittery. just go to school like normal and go to bed early

what about preventing 1 or 2 silly mistakes in math? also, when should i take my last full length practice test? thanks!

also for those who got 800’s in CR, did you finish each section with a lot of time to spare? thanks

@TheEpic2401Man Usually I’d finish each section with about 10-15 minutes to double check questions, especially those I was unsure on.

Hey @JuicyMango

First of all, I’d like to congratulate you on your high score and getting out of the 2250 slump! I have a question for you too. Did you consistently get 800s on the critical reading tests you did before going in to take the test or did you sometimes get below an 800? And if you did, what was your range of score? Thanks.

@TheEpic2401Man I went to school the day before, and advise you to do the same. Definitely don’t study any material regarding the SAT a day before the actual test. At that point, you want to relax and try to eat healthy to keep yourself focused. Go to bed early (of course); it helps a LOT more than you think.

Hmmm there are so many CR strategies LOL. During the test, I really tried to enjoy the passages I was reading so I retained the information better. Try to finish the vocab in no more than 1-2 minutes because you want to spend most of your time on the passages. The biggest tip I can give is to support each of your answer choices. If you’ve taken enough practice tests, the wrong answers should start “popping” out at you. Just try to calm down during the test and use process of elimination to cross out the CB decoy answer choices. Again, if you’ve practiced enough doing CR on the actual day should be like second-nature for you

Actually, I feel like I got really lucky with my CR score. I mostly got -4/-3 range on practice tests, so I was getting high 700’s but never 800’s. I will admit that the week before I got -1 on a practice test, so I think it all kind of just “clicked” for me at one point. Of course aim for -0 in your practice tests but I’d say you have a chance at getting an 800 if you’re AT LEAST getting -4 on practice tests. I definitely believe that a lot luck cis a big factor in the CR section. But if I got an 800, you definitely can because I absolutely stink at anything to do with english lol :p.

That’s awesome that you’re aiming for a 2400; to be honest it’s not that hard to achieve if you really focus hard and make sure you don’t make any silly mistakes. I was off by my essay, so don’t make the same mistake I did by focusing so much on the MC portion of the test that you forget important things like that. Well, I hope I helped and good luck :P. And remember, anything 2200+ is weighted similar anyways. It’s kind of a bummer, but its true. These days, extracurriculars count for WAY more than a few points on some test.

@bobthebuilder13 Lol I just realized I answered your question in my post above. But to reiterate, I think most people who got 800’s in CR didn’t always get that score in practice tests, but they probably got at least 750+'s consistently. Don’t worry too much about scores, just try to fix any obvious weaknesses you have at this point. For example, are you missing a lot of tone questions? Maybe you’re struggling with the “Big picture” questions such as main point?

@JuicyMango Thanks for answering so quickly. I got a 2310 last time with a 710 in reading, so I have to step my game up for the February makeup. I was just wondering because I have gotten 800s in reading before, but I don’t get it all the time. Your answer gave me some more hope for the 2400 dream lol.

hey @juicymango what was your trick to preventing 1-2 silly mistakes in math? thanks!

Does score verification ever change score?
And how often does that happen ?

@TheEpic2401Man I don’t know why you are asking this question because I am sure you know the only answer: practice.
