I'm a freshman planning on minoring in Japanese, which requires that I take up to Japanese 6 before I start on the upper division courses. I know some Japanese but probably not enough to place into Japanese 2. So I was thinking of taking the Japanese intensive course (elementary 1~3) during the summer of 2012, so I can be done with the elementary series all at one time and then start taking the Intermediate series during my sophomore year.

Does that sound like a good idea? Has anybody taken the Japanese summer intensive course before?

I’ve never taken an intensive language course, but I’ve taken the regular ones. You must be prepared to devote all of your time to Japanese. You have to spend a considerable amount of time both in and outside of the classroom. Given that you already know some basics, and assuming you won’t be employed during the summer, I would recommend doing it. And with languages, as long as you love it, it should be a relatively fun class for you.

It’s always good to get ahead and if you put a lot of effort in it and get an A, it will be a big GPA booster since it’s 15 units all at once.

And if you are really concerned, you can also spend some time self-studying to prepare yourself for the course.
