How difficult are the Humanities 1A-B-C courses? Although I'm not quite enthusiastic of taking this series compared to Writing 29B and C, I'll reduce the number of courses I need to take by 4.

I've heard (from numerous sources) that hum 1x is a HARD class. There is A LOT of work and you're competing against CHP/humanities students. You'll take less classes, but its equivalent, in number of units, to taking 3 humanistic inquiry classes, 2 writing classes, and 1 class from breadth requirement VII-A (i think). I would hardly call it 'faster'.

Take it though. You will learn wisdom beyond your years.

staplers: no, unless you are very confident in your time management skills.

How hard would it be to take Math 2D/E (Multivariable Calculus) and Math 2J (Infinite Series and Basic Linear Algebra) at the same time? I was thinking of taking 2D and 2J in the spring because I'd be finished with Writing and Biosci courses at that time, but I may do 2D in winter and 2E in the spring with 2J.

What is Humanities to begin with? I have somewhat of a pessimistic view of humans overall so this class doesn't sound very enthusiastic for me. If it touches on philosophy and human nature however, then I will be excited :)

Also, what's the maximum number of credits you can take in 4 years? Jas0n, you recommended that I should take no more than 20 credits per quarter and I'll try to abide by that, but I'm wondering if there's any limit to how many credits I can take.

Also, will Humanities touch up on writing skills or is it just theories and ideas? And can you provide an example of homeworks/class work assigned from that class?

google uci humanities core. that should give you some info on the class.

They do have writing assignments (i think there are 3 essays a quarter, 1 book to read a week (though im not sure, wait for jason to reply because im just an incoming freshman too)).

Hey everyone, sorry for being a bit late on responses. I was busy with finals. Thanks ShoeFactory.

Cal90:

If the class is transferable for credits in a certain GE area or for a class, it will transfer that way. If not, you’ll simply get elective credits, or units without the name of a class next to it. If you’ve taken English before your arrival to UCI, you may use it to clear some of the writing requirements. However, you must remember to take the AWPE. If you’ve used your writing class to surpass the AWPE, then you can no longer use that class for anything else.

I wouldn’t recommend taking chem 1C over the summer. The lab and lecture hours are very crammed in. On top of that, my friends have told me chem only gets more complex as you go along in the series. If you do not remember your fundamentals of math and calculus 1, then you will definitely struggle in math 2B when you come around to take the course. It’s still possible to pull it off and get an A. I skipped a quarter before I took the second part of multivariable calculus. I had to put extra work to refresh myself, but I still got that A.

Confident:

Bring whatever you like, even a microwave. Make sure not to be caught. If you are caught, just remove it. Renting the fridge and microwave is not worth the money, but it is really really convenient. My roommate insisted on getting one, and I let him do it. It ended up being a great commodity. It has a sizable freezer compartment =].

Selina:

Many people like dropping from writing because well…it is writing. Get on the waitlist and see. Don’t give up hope yet. As a bio major, staying on track is crucial if you want to get all your requirements finished in a timely manner to open yourself up for outside-classroom activities such as volunteer work, research, internships, etc. Make sure you pace yourself at the beginning though. For the first year bio majors, everyone takes their deal of writing, chemistry, and biology. Once you get on campus, you’ll be more accustomed to things.

Staplers:

Business economics majors are one of the most relaxed people on campus. Don’t add any more classes – you’re on the right track. You may even be ahead because of humcore.

BirdKiller:

Humcore is definitely much more difficult compared to the writing 30 series. It’s well worth the trouble, especially if you have the writing capabilities to keep up.
Ddbb:

Math 2D/2E are not possible to take simultaneously. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’ve finished both classes and Math 2E is a continuation of Math 2D. Taking Math 2J simultaneously will be fine.

BirdKiller:

Humcore is not about humanities. It’s basically a writing course that involves a lot of literature, critical thinking, and anything else related. I remember people talking about Antigone. Look up the website, including past websites listed on EEE (a UCI website).

I don’t know of the cap. I’ve never had problems about a unit cap at UCI, but my friends at other UCs have complained about one. If you do well, you can exceed any cap under the dean’s approval.

Yeah, you're right. What I meant was that I'd take 2D in the winter, and 2E + 2J in the spring. Thanks for the help, wanted to make sure it wouldn't be suicide to take both at the same time.

Heard this somewhere, but not sure where or if its right....

Is it true that we do not go to any discussions unless we've had the lecture for the subject first(in first week of school)?

evilleprechaun:

It truly depends on the course. Go to every class on the first day just in case. Everyone does it.

Jason, I wonder if HSLH 100A and PCB 1200 is near each other, I have to make it from HSLH 100A to PCB 1200 in 10 minutes.

i tried and i tried but i cannot decipher those codes they call CLASSROOMS on my schedule. am i the only moron here who is having trouble, and is there going to be any form of clarification anytime soon??

Tetsu:

HSLH and PCB are not that far from each other. 10 min. is enough.

eonxblue:

I'm not sure what you mean by classrooms since there is no section named that. The classrooms have acronynms and room numbers given on WebReg. The corresponding buildings can be found on the campus map on the website. You'll be given one during welcome week from somewhere also. It's a bit confusing at first and one place, PCB, might not be on the map yet (new building). Just keep looking at it, and you'll figure it out.

"classrooms"

MSTB - Multipurpose Science and Technology Building
ET - Engineering Tower
SSPA - Social Science Plaza A
PSLH - Physical Sciences Lecture Hall

If your looking for your "classrooms" basically look for the acronyms. They should all be one the campus map. Also, the numbers are the room numbers i think. So MSTB 125 will be Multipurpose Science and Technology Building room 125.

i wanna know what book uci uses for

Any comments? Also, how practical/useful will a laptop be if you already have a desktop computer? Is noise from the desktop computer a concern?

birdkiller, how many years of foreign language did you take in hs?
