You are required to enroll in discussions along with the class.

But many discussions are just a waste of time. Go to the first few and figure out if they're worth ditching. Last quarter, I put my math discussion at a time that i KNEW i would ditch to open up room for another class. No one wants to go to 9oclock discussion. Sched looks fine but I am a science major so i dunno. What major takes both poli sci and econ? Which are you taking for breadth, polisci i assume?

You usually go over homeworks, tests, quizzes, etc. Depending on the class, you might be taking quizzes during discussions. They're really helpful, especially for asking questions in a smaller classroom environment.

chem major who want to go to dentistry school someday...(1st quarter)
physics 7a 8~9 mwf
chem 1a 10~11 mwf
math 2a 2~3 mwf
writing 39a 9:30~11:30 tt

dnduswo, that's a ridiculous course load for a freshman. If you haven't had any actual college experience, you might be overwhelmed unless you normally study a lot and don't socialize haha. Of course, I just say this from experience and doing something similar. There IS a possibility you will do well, but I don't know your habits. Trust me, drop physics.

well i wanted to try this out for my first quarter. how is this for my schedule:
Physics 7a
Math2a
Writing 39b
??
btw: all three classes are MWF with physics and math discussions on thursday.

dnduswo: that's fine. If you're not confident, drop physics. I'd tell you to go for it if you were engineering but you're not, and you got time to waste since you're a chem major.
kdbar: that's fine, but i don't know what your schedule is. You might wanna replace that ?? with something though.
reddogg: DROP HUMANITIES CORE NAO. if you care about your gpa (and i know you do because you want to go to med school) you better drop that class son and add writing 39b and add another class if you want (breadth and math come to mind). If you don't heed my warning, you better not complain like 95% of humcore students.

jason, maybe i am biased towards taking too many classes. I think i am taking like 22-23 units next quarter :|

lol reddog ^^ Didn't see the h in front of humcore and chem. Are you taking chem with penner? If you are in tobias, switch and take penner. He is an awesome teacher.

I am CHP and all my friends take humcore but I am exempt because I am an engineering major. Everyone hates that class. Ruined many GPAs.

If you're taking Chem H2A is it required that you take the accompanying lab (H2LA)? And by not taking it does it disqualify you from taking the next lab in the series (H2LB)? By the way I'm a Bio Sci major, if that has any bearing. From what I know I only have to take LB and LC as a Bio Major...correct me if I'm wrong.

I would also greatly appreciate if someone could evaluate my current schedule:

Bio Sci 2A - (should i drop?)
Chem H2A - (Tobas at the moment...switch to Penner?)
Bio Sci 93 - (I could skip this class but decided not to..5 on AP Bio)
Writing 39B
Spanish 1A =[ (no previous Spanish background )
(with all accompanying discussions)
18 units

lol, ShoeFactory. You were always good so lots of units don't phase you as much as it does for me :|.

I've taken 17 units on average, and I've done course loads just as heavy as the ones I'm seeing listed here. At one time, I took math, physics, chem, and writing 39B. It was a pretty hard quarter, but I didn't socialize nearly as much as I did in every other quarter up til now, so it wasn't stressfull at all. HOWEVER, I made a mistake in 39B, and I ended up with a 3.5 GPA :[. This is for everyone: if you're new to the college system, I'd advise you not take 17 units of hard classes (langauges, sciences, math, etc.) on your first quarter. Sub one for a known easy class like econ or anthropology if you want to knock units out. Check ratemyprof.

drop bio2a

switch to penner

take h2LA because it's required.

why are you taking spanish?

take bio 93 but skip bio 94

There's no way to skip the bio core if you're a biology major. 93, 94, 97, 98, 99, 100LW are all required. It even says you can't skip bio 93 even with an AP 5 unless you're not a biology major in the catalogue. Sorry if that sounded mean or anything.
