I was just named my school's Jefferson Scholar nominee. I know the whole interview process and everything is pretty intense but how intense is the actual application?

I am a jeff. The application is like any other college app. The process is actually quite fun.

The application is fairly simple. The interviews are intense and the entire process is much more biased towards soft factors and fluff than anything else (beyond a point, of course).

cavalier, what do you mean by soft factors and fluff?

If cav 302 is a jeff scholar I am surprised. There was no fluff in my experience. I know all the other scholars and I've never met a smarter, humbler, group of people. Not "connected", not "privileged" though the scholarship is not needs based. It was a grueling competition...logic, seminars, writing, interviews. No fluff in my experience.

17-3 Duke. Who cares about academics? Can you play QB?

Oops! 24-3. Can you play any position? And stay out of jail or not get caught cheating?

congrats swoopes for being nominated. That's an honor right there. Good luck with the competition. Just be prepared to be asked some difficult questions and try to relax. I have met some great people through this experience, and even those who don't make the final cut will tell you that it was an enriching process.

Hey- parent here - high school can only nominate one candidate for either jefferson or emory scholars program - has anyone here been through both schools scholarship interviews - have to make choice - if no scholarship then won't apply - help!!

Well UVA and Emory are very different schools. Make your decision on which school seems more appealing.

I actually have a question about the Jefferson scholarship - I know the deadline for completing the Nomination Form is 11/3, but what about the UVa app? Is it due with the nomination form or in January with the rest of the applications?

It is due at the regular time, in January.

yeswecan= if you wouldn't mind sharing any stats, that would be great - my d has these 1580/2330 /SAT, NMSF (so far) , Valdectorian at competitive public school,1/485, 5 AP exams so far with all 5s, normal ecs but nothing stand outish. school will nominate for Jefferson scholarship. What made you choose UVA and are you happy there??? Thanks!

SAT's 2300
6 AP Exams 5's on all of them
valedictorian public high school.
I won several full scholarships but chose UVA because of the location.
I am very happy here. The Jeff scholar community has been more welcoming and supportive than I ever imagined. It is much more than statistics. Judging from the people I've met, they are looking for the total package. Citizenship, scholarship, leadership.

S has been informed his GC will be nominating him for Jefferson. I went online to read about it and still have questions. It says 11/1 is the nomination deadline - does that mean that S will be required to submit his Jeff essays and whatever other material by then? Or will the Jeff people contact S with instructions after the GC nomination is submitted? And, if so, what is the deadline for the nominee to get his information submitted?

Curious as well about the interviews - if S is abroad during the interview process, how will that be handled?

Any info appreciated - thanks...

Thanks - yeswecan - glad to hear the jeff scholar community is great - have a super year!

I was named nominee today, but I'm pretty sure I won't be winning the scholarship, competition seems pretty tough. I'd like to make it to the finals though, that'd be fun.

czhao i have the same attitude. i think the whole thing will be great experience

That was my attitude and I made it...so maybe you will too. What part of the country are you both from?

I'm from Woodbridge, VA. A little more than an hour from Charlottesville.
