i'm in the suburbs of Philadelphia

Good luck to both of you. It's an extraordinary opportunity and I consider myself very lucky, especially when I consider the great candidates who didn't make it.

Yea, I think my school is behind cause I just turned in my essay to the school. I think I will find out whether I am a nominee or not this Friday, hopefully!

Miltonmom - I have a D who was a Jeff Scholar nominee last year and we're from Georgia, so I know a bit about Emory as well. The JS process is very much a longshot and I have a sense that the Emory program may provide a higher percentage likelihood. In all honesty, my D did not have a good JS experience. We made a 200-mile RT to go to an info session, at which the alumni chair seemed to know many of the Atlanta-area nominees and their parents on a first-name basis. Then we returned five days later - another 200-mile RT - for her group interview, and her impression was that her interviewers had no real interest in her and were just going through the motions. FWIW, she's a pretty good interview - she won a statewide contest in interview skills, and had great Harvard and Yale interviews which led to acceptances at both. But not only did she not make the second round of the Atlanta area interviews, no one from the JS committee bothered to call and tell her that she had not made it until a day or two before the second round. She had to turn down other opportunities for that Saturday until she was certain that she wasn't obliged to make a third 200-mile trip.

Wait..is the deadline for the entire JS app November 1/3?

My experience was the program was much like gadad's daughter's.

mine was different. I did not know anyone, had no connections, felt very intimidated at first, but absolutely loved the seminars and essay at the finalists' weekend. The process was daunting and kind of scary, but I'm glad I did it. Now that I know the other Jeff Scholars, I am honored to be among them. So many of them have contributed to their communities and have overcome difficulties. Of course some come from privileged backgrounds, but most do not and are ordinary people who have done some extraordinary things.

gadad- thanks for the input - my daughter will definitely apply, realizing its a long shot -
did your daughter look at vanderbilt or the uga honors program? - we were very impressed by the honors program @ uga. where did your daughter end up going and is she happy there? thanks!

i was nominated! But questions? For the personal essay, I am totally unsure of what to write about, I want to write about something random, but I am afraid if i do, the jeff scholar people will think I am totally off the scholarship, leadership, and citizenship theme.

If you do not mind me asking, did you all jefferson scholars write about random topics, or something pertaining to the theme?

I was just nominated by my school as well... but they haven't given me any more details than that I was nominated. Essay? What's the prompt? I want to be able to think about it a bit.

Doesn't the completed app have to be in by Nov 1?

yea the deadline is Nov 1

My paper said Nov. 3rd.

Either way I need to get to work.

Can anyone tell me what happens after the form is submitted? When and where does the next step in the process tend to occur? We live in TN, so would she be most likely contacted by a member of the organization who lives in TN or would it be regional and involve travel further away? If it's an interview, are they flexible with dates and times?

You will be contacted by someone for a local interview. Then out of those local nominees from the various Tennessee schools, one will be chosen from the region. That one person will advance to Finalists Weekend in Charlottesville in March.

Thanks, yeswecan.
I think she stands a good chance of at least being an Echols scholar if admitted, but of course the Jefferson is highly unlikely for her.
I was a bit surprised that there was not a section on the application that was devoted to volunteer activities. Is that something that is brought up in the interview?

For one of the 5 150 word extracurricular descriptions, can I use the same short answer I wrote about in the Common App as one of my activities?
Does anyone know if this is due the 1st or the 3rd?

hope4freeride:
Use one or 2 of the extracurricular activities to talk about volunteering.

Too late for that. D kept arguing with me that there was no place to write about volunteering and I told her yes she could use what you suggested. She can be so pigheaded about things, so screw it.

My extra-curriculars had volunteer components so I put them together.
