Hey guys here's a thread for anyone who is a Jefferson Scholar Finalist and will be attending the weekend in March. I'm one from Maryland, and I just found out this afternoon. I'm so excited!

Congratulations! I’m a finalist from Virginia. I’m so excited/nervous for the finalist weekend, ahh!

Yeah it sounds like it will be an awesome experience. COngrats on being a finalist to you too!

I’m a finalist from Atlanta!

Nice to meet you both! My name is Avery by the way. Are y’all planning on arriving on Wednesday or Thursday?

When did decisions go out? Has everyone who got invited found out already? Can you posts your stats?

Congratulations, all! We don’t have much involvement in this part of the process, so it’s exciting to see this thread. :)

Obviously, Jeff Scholars tend to have wonderful stats, but the interviews make the process about so much more!

Naggingmama–I’m pretty sure that when you find out is based on your region. I’d venture to say that some regions probably haven’t made decisions yet. I’m pretty sure that most regional committees will inform you whether you got to the next round or not, so if you haven’t heard anything, they probably haven’t decided yet!

What are the typical stats that you should have? I did not realize they were done by regions. Congrats to all who found out!

naggingmama–I don’t really wanna put all my stats outh there but I’d assume the average Jefferson scholar has several SAT II’s around 750 or higher, 2150+ SAT scores, lots of AP classes etc. I don’t think it’s about the stats so much as it is the interviews though. If I’m not mistaken, everyone will be notified in early February of their status in the competition by the National office for the Jefferson Scholars Corporation. It just so happens that certain regions notified their nominees early.

GreyWolf–Congrats!

Has anyone in Texas heard anything??

Hi all. Congrats to all the finalists that have posted thus far. My D is still waiting to hear either way. Any news anywhere?

My son interviewed in Chicago last Saturday. Was expecting to hear this week - but still hasn’t heard.

My D received a letter today that she is the Arkansas region finalist. We are extremely happy that she will be making the trip to UVA in a few weeks!

Hey, my guidance counselor told me today that I’m a finalist. I’m from South Carolina. They have not notified me yet though, they just told her. Did any of you find out the same way? by your gc?

loveistheanswer: I found out via a letter in the mail, I can’t remember if it was from the regional or national committee but it wasn’t from my school. My counselor didn’t know until after/same time as me, but I know the process is different in each individual region.

Sweet, I got a letter two days after my gc told me. I’m quite excited though!

Congratulations to those of your selected. I put this post on another thread, but wanted to make sure those of you who are going to finalist weekend can read this.

My daughter made it as far as the Jefferson Scholarship Weekend last year. She enjoyed meeting the professors but was very disappointed in some of the current Scholars that she met. The finalists were invited to a party at UVA during the Scholarship Weekend by some of the current Scholars. My daughter arrived at the party to find most of the Scholars very drunk and beer and liquor was offered and served to the high school finalists invited there to interview for the weekend. Some of the finalists were not even 18 yet. Some of the scholars also told the seniors about their “sexcapades” during their finalist weekend. My daughter left with several other finalists shortly after they arrived. She is not naive about what goes on on college campuses, but one would think that the current Jefferson Scholars would not be putting on that kind show for the next group of scholars. It flies in the face of all the Jeffersonian Scholars “ideals” and UVA’s “honor code”. This group of current scholars did not represent the program well and are really an embarrassment to all the alumni that fund the scholarships. The experience really soured her on UVA.

For those of you who make it to the Scholar weekend, everyone receives an acceptance to the university during the weekend whether or not you are chosen for the Jefferson scholarship. You will also receive a small scholarship if you choose to attend UVA. My daughter is very happy at Princeton with a grant that is just about the equivalent of the Jefferson Scholarship.

Hi all, I am going down for the “weekend” as well. Does anyone know the actual dates yet?

Greatchefdad, if your daughter wasn’t chosen as a Jeff Scholar, you shouldn’t try to throw a wet blanket on all the finalists. Selections Weekend is a wonderful experience.
