Jester or Honors Dorms?

Which do you recommend? I know the Honors Dorms might provide me with a better atmosphere for studying, but the rooms themselves look as bad, if not worse, as Jester (from the pictures online).

I’ve been in both sides of jester and I liked the look of jester west better than east, plus they have a very nice newly renovated lobby with an awesome 24 hour quiet lounge. The rooms in JWest are the pull out beds, but I guess to me, those made the rooms seem small. I’ve only been inside the lobbies and study areas of the honors dorms and those seem very nice with a more antique-y feel, but I haven’t been inside the rooms. I know a lot of people who lived in honors dorms my freshman year and chose to stay another year since they said they really liked their dorms and the location. I’d say the honors dorms are better for studying though since their study areas seem more quiet and fit for studying than jester’s areas (w/ the exception of jester west’s quiet lounge)

Jester. Yes the “atmosphere” is better. But if you are truly going to get some studying done, you are better off going to the library (which is across the street of Jester). And also the library is quieter than the 24hr JW study lounge.

Honors quad and Jester cost the same. Except both jester E and W have better rooms.

Rooms in Blanton are as bad/worse than Jester. Rooms in Andrews/Carothers are significantly better than Jester. It’s just luck of the draw.

The Honors Dorms are fun and close to The Drag/Guadalupe. Jester can be inconvenient, especially if you are on a high floor. It is close to the stadium, though.

Actually all the rooms in the honors quad will be renovated by this coming fall–and Blanton especially is not “worse” than Jester. It now has moveable furniture. You can view all the rooms online at the DHFS website: <a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining;

All rooms in Jester have sinks, which is pretty nice.

I lived in Blanton this past year and while the rooms look nice and new, in terms of size, they’re either about the same size or smaller than some rooms in Jester. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Honors Quad, it’s just not the Ritz-Carlton or anything. Andrews and Carothers have bigger rooms and have a more antique feel (I think they’re some of the oldest on campus). Personally, I would much rather live there than in Jester… there are tons of places to study, including quiet areas, and the Quad itself is nice. It’s a pretty close atmosphere because none of the three dorms are very big. Also the location is pretty good, close to the Drag, West Campus, engineering buildings, Tower area and so on.

Then again, if you plan on being in the library/gym all the time or if you’re a business student or something then Jester might be a better option. It’s not that bad - just, in my experience, it’s huge, with narrow, dark, maze-like winding halls, and I think it would suck to be on one of the top floors.

edit: oh yeah and if you end up in Blanton, you won’t have a sink - which gets tiring by the end of the year.

Well I heard from a friend of mine that they put almost all freshmen honors students in Blanton, and that Andrews and Carothers are all upperclassmen. Is this true?

Well you definitely have a better chance of getting put in Blanton because upperclassmen get to choose their dorm (and most choose Andrews and Carothers) but I knew many freshmen that lived in the other two.

Now that you mention it, the more I think about it, and the people I know, it may be true.

It’s not true. It’s just the sophomores may self-select into other halls, and they would naturally group up together.
