JHU or Purdue. OMG! WHAT A DILEMMA!

Hi guys. I'm gonna get to my question STRAIGHT.
I got into both: Johns Hopkins and Purdue. No aid anywhere, but Purdue is cheaper.
I intend to do Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering.
Cost aside, which would be a better option?
I've been checking out the rankings and shiz.
Purdue is clearly more reputed for Engineering. But JHU is number 14 in the US, according to USNWR. Also, on the Top 200 World univs, it's number 13 (but this is probably due to its brilliant Med school).

Okay. Which is a better option? I know both school are brilliant in their own way, but if I want to transfer to say MIT/CalTech/Berkeley/Cornell next fall, will I be a better candidate if I apply from JHU or if I apply from Purdue? JHU clearly is a better school overall rep wise and generally; but Purdue is better for Engineering

My observations : JHU is number 13 in the world (out of 200), while Purdue in't on the list. Purdue is number 10, 9 and 7 resp for Elect, Comp and Mech engg, while JHU is no. 14 in the US for general Engineering.

I have a slight penchant for JHU, but that is just me.

PLEASE help me, lol. I think I included everything I know about the two, except for their locations, cos I don't know ANYTHING about those. CONVINCE me to goto the better univ, fellow members! ^.^

I hope you’re willing to base your choice of school on more than just what a few unreliable rankings have to say.

Purdue!! (see my response on college search forum)

and I agree, you shouldn’t go by the rankings, you should ask some engineers in the US and ask them what they think of the schools yourself.

If you’re sure you want to get a job as an engineer, I’d consider Purdue. If you think that you might want to not be an engineer, go with JHU.

The rankings are pretty reliable, and they reflect what other academics think of that school. Of course, that’s not everything, but it’s not irrelevant. Outside of engineering, Hopkins will probably have a stronger alumni network.

You want us to tell you which is the best school because you are planning to TRANSFER? Please…did you get off of both waitlists? Is that why this is coming so late, or are you already a transfer?

Thanks for the replies, guys!
RacinReaver, I was afraid someone might point that out. In my defense, I really HAVE done quite alot of research myself. Though, being an international, I didn’t quite get the opportunity to visit the campuses, I know JHU is actually well-known for it’s “park-like” Homewood campus.
Also, I’ve heard that Engineering at JHU is underrated.

Hi, pierre! I just saw it! Thanks for sharing your opinions! :)

al6200.
I’m still undecided. I might become an engineer. Or I might even do an MBA! I really have no clue atm.

thumper1.
No. I was a regular admit. And being an international (who applied with aid), I know how tough getting into JHU was and probably is the reason why I’m more inclined towards it. But Like everyone says, Purdue has a better Engg. program, while JHU is ranked better overall (generally, ie).

So, in the long run, which is more important? Studying at a better reputed college or studying at a lower-rep college with a better rep in your major.

Youtube, Purdue has a top 15 business program (in case you want your MBA) and a top 10 engineering program while Johns Hopkins doesn’t really have a good business program. Something else to consider.

When you get into your work field, the recruitor won’t necessarily be looking at your college reputation as a whole, they will be looking at the school’s reputation in your field. There’s a reason MIT is the better place to go for engineering as opposed to Harvard, the #1 overall school in the country.

Well-said, pierre.
Hmm. I really wanted you guys to tell me to goto JHU, since that was my preference, but lol.
Any new points are welcome, btw! I really need some XD
Also, I really won’t be doing Business from JHU, lol. I’d choose Stern/UPenn, def.

well YouTube I think that since you already have your mind made up, maybe you should go to JHU if that is your preference (we can’t force you to pick a college), but I think that Purdue (and many engineering majors on CC will agree) is a better choice than JMU since you are thinking about doing business too.

YouTube, you mentioned the World’s Best Colleges rankings, if you go to the engineering section where they rank the world’s best collges in the engineering fields, you will find Purdue at #33 and you will see Johns Hopkins nowhere on that list: [World’s Best Colleges: Top Engineering and IT Universities - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-colleges/2008/11/20/worlds-best-colleges-top-engineering-and-it-universities.html)

Dude, I just want to make sure that I won’t be regretting my decisions a year or two down the line.
In this time of recession, cost may become a big criterion in the future; so much so, that I may want to transfer to a univ which gives me significant aid then, like I mentioned.

Basically, I’m getting varied answers from different places, and hence the confusion. Like you said Purdue, while TPL09’s with JHU and so is seigetank (on another forum). AARGH! lol.
Thanks alot, dude.

I’m still confused…if you are a regular decision admit…WHY didn’t you have to make a decision by May 1st…like most everyone else?

Regardless…the engineering programs at Purdue are excellent. Go there…but not with the plan of transfering after a year. Get your bachelors there and then if you want to go to grad school, look at applying to MIT/Cal Tech/Berkeley, or Cornell.

I am well aware of that YouTube, I’m just trying to let you know that Purdue is the best choice for you, Purdue is by far the cheapest school that you are considering going (or going in the future).

Also, have you see the SmartMoney article about which college graduates earn the most money in future jobs compared to the money they pay for college? Purdue is ranked #9
read the article here and see the chart/rankings at the end of the article: http://www.uri.edu/facsen/Money_Jan.2009.pdf</a></p>

Hey, pierre!
Just stumbled across this page: http://i42.■■■■■■■.com/264o0f5.jpg</a> (I suck at highlighting, lol)
Not much of a difference, here.
But you’re right about Purdue. It seems to be in the top 10 in EACH and EVERY Engineering major, while Hopkins isn’t even on the list!
Wow, I feel like I’m going towards Purdue now :P

How much does the difference in cost matter to you?

wait…***? You are a regular admit? You should have sent in a deposit to JHU by May 1.

Right…I said that too…I thought regular decision admits had to commit to a school AND send their deposit by MAY 1…for both Purdue and JHU. How come THIS Youtube guy is making this post about college selection in mid-May…please clarify how YOU got a three week extension.

thumper1 and blah, many of my friends sent deposits to two schools so that they could keep on choosing into May

Like pierre said. I sent in my deposits by MAY 1, but to more than one school. Basically, I bought myself more time, the way I look at it. I need to decide quick since I need a final answer soon.
