JHU or UVA?

Hello everyone,
So I would like input on what college to attend next year.
I would like to double major: Classics (Latin/Greek) and History.
I'm a Korean-American (not a Fob) living in Virginia and I want to do well in college, while having fun. I can't decide between these two colleges because of the whole "prestige" issue (JHU is a renowned university, whereas everyone in Virginia seems to go to UVA), rumors (JHU = all work, no play), etc. You can probably guess where my parents want me to go.

Factors to consider:
JHU:
- Asking me to pay about $2000 per year
- Very prestigious (don't know how I was accepted - probably because I didn't want to be a doctor)
- The perennial "So you want to be a doctor?" question
- Everyone studies their brains out (?)
- Smaller school

UVA:
- Asking me to pay about $8000 per year
- Very strong Classics and History departments
- Happy students
- Larger school
- Everyone in VA goes to UVA (kind of puts me off)

Thoughts?

is jhu really asking you to pay only 2k a year??? Smart choice is JHU. Smarter choice is UVA…i have a feeling it’ll prepare you better for real world, but thats just me.

Everyone in VA wishes s/he went to UVA, not everyone in VA goes to UVA. And outside of the sciences, JHU’s reputation is not that much more than UVA’s, by the way. They are just known for different things…UVA is known to those who want to study business/law/humanities while JHU is known to those whose interests lie in the sciences/medicine, etc.

wahoomb is dead on about Virginians. UVA is one of, if not the most selective school in Virginia, and only the best compete. There are a lot of Virginians there only because it is a state school and required to have a certain number of in-state students. Plus, I can’t imagine being deterred from attending an awesome university because a lot of the students are from one state. Believe me, everyone there is still qualified.

Agree^^. Only top students in VA actually get accepted to UVa. Saying that everyone from VA goes to UVA is like saying, everyone is CA goes to Berkely or UCLA. UVa is just as prestigious as JHU and I think you will have a more enjoyable 4 years, but I can understand the dilemma. Two great choices on the table.

maybe you’ve already answered your own questions/concerned.

~ everyone in VA goes to UVA ( puts you off ) … NOT everyone !
There are oodles & oodles of highly qualified top students who didn’t get in & many more drool over & dream about getting in every year.

~ do YOU wanted to go to Hopkins? does your parents wanted you to go there ?
~ I think both schools are a >>win win<<< , there is no bad choice here. Depends on how you feel about them. I had visited JHU & it is really beautiful there.
~ JHU has 24% plus Asian students , UVA has aprx 11% Asian ( aprx only )

From an economic standpoint, I’d obviously say go for JHU.

However, the more personal and perhaps more important thing to consider is how you personally feel at each school & campus. While there is a lot to be said for both colleges, you should consider which environment you think is truly best for you. One of the biggest differences between UVA and JHU is surroundings. JHU is a rather striking enclave within the larger Baltimore community (and even the immediate Baltimore community right outside of JHU). However, JHU does have the advantage of an urban area (albeit perhaps not the most benign one). Charlottesville, on the other hand, is rather small and relatively safe place. But, despite the many great places in Cville, it’s not exactly the hub of diversity like a more expansive city is. So, essentially, there are positives and negatives to each environment, and I think it’s very important to consider which surroundings you prefer.

Also, someone else already mentioned the higher # of asian students at JHU, so that might be another thing to consider. I’m not sure if JHU self-segregates, but it seems like UVA has a strong tendency toward it, which can be … perturbing.

Also, as far as humanities (esp Classics and History) go, the two are comparable and while UVA is more well-known of the two for the humanities, JHU has solid departments in those fields as well.
