JHU vs VCU for Pre-med

I know this is a no brainer, but what are the pros and cons of each?

I have been admitted into VCU's BME major, but not at JHU. I also feel that at JHU I will definitely have a lot more competition, causing me to need to work even harder to outshine others that are under the Pre-med advising track.

I know that VCU has a good pre-med program and Science department. I feel like I will be much more comfortable at VCU than at JHU because of the academic rigor.

Does anyone have any pros/cons for each school that could help me make a decision? I have narrowed my list down to these two.

You are right, it would be a no brainer for most people. But you are also right that Hopkins will be challenging. Don’t you like to be challenged? I’m not sure I’d want to go to a physician who didn’t want to be challenged. Remember, since you were admitted, the Admissions Office believes you can do it.

If it were me and VCU didn’t offer me a scholarship or any other benefits, I’d go with Hopkins (assuming cost isn’t substantially different). You need to be challenged in order to succeed in grad school, especially in such a competitive field. Also, Hopkins is known for to be fiercely competitive in the pre-med field, and if your able to survive it, the prestige of the school itself should boost your chances into med school admission.

I can’t see VCU being substantially easier either because almost every biomedical engineering program is rigorous. It would suck if you go to VCU expecting it to be easy, and end up studying just as much or more than if you went to JHU.

VCU has offered me some benefits that I was not able to receive at JHU. If I go to VCU I plan to apply to a pre-health acceleration program. I also plan to apply to the Honors College next year. All this can be done at JHU, but will be MUCH harder.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I will be at the top of the GPAs at VCU which will give me plenty of opportunities, while I may not be at JHU.

I plan to work extremely hard at wherever I go; but if I go to VCU, I will make sure I stand out plenty so I can get into a great medical school… Hopefully JHU. I’d love to attend their medical school, but right now I’m not sure if their undergrad is what’s right for me.

One more quick question. I am aware that a diploma from Johns Hopkins University will look so much better than one from Virginia Commonwealth University.

I want to know… If I do choose to go to VCU, is there still a really high chance for me to be admitted to a great Medical School like Hopkins if I apply myself?

Frankly, the physicians who treat me believe that they are as good or better than anyone in their field. Now, that may sound egotistical but I want my doctor to have a lot of self confidence. Maybe I’m alone but I would not seek advice from someone who turned down Hopkins for VCU because the latter would be easier. Would you?

In a typical class of 100 at Hopkins Med, 10-12 will have done their undergraduate work at JHU. 0-1 will be from VCU. What does that tell you?

I am not turning down Hopkins for VCU because it would be easier, because I feel that a Biomedical Engineering program would be difficult. I spent two weeks at Hopkins this past summer for a program and i did not feel at home. I didn’t like the area. Now, I loved VCU. I could definitely see myself there.

I know that it needs to be taken into consideration that Hopkins is a MUCH better school and some of my ideas/worries need to be sacrificed, but I am here for people to help me try to make my decision.

Thanks!!

And I could apply myself in everything I do at VCU. I would have to go the extra mile and work twice as hard in order to go to a great medical school. The fact that maybe 0-1 go to Johns Hopkins Medical School may just mean that they are not as applied as I could be.

If anyone else has any other advice for me, please tell :)

Go to JHU unless the cost difference is unacceptable. If you are a good student, you should be fine at either school.

Hopkins students do better on their MCATs and/or Hopkins attracts brighter pre-meds and/or Hopkins has more pre-meds and/or Hopkins has more ambitious pre-meds and/or going to Hopkins undergrad prepares one better for med school admissions and/or Hopkins med gives preference to Hopkins undergrads

The cost different is a bit different. I have to pay around $6,000 at VCU (original tuition is $25,000) and $25,000 at JHU (original tuition is $60,000). Now, JHU did give me GREAT aid.

I do think I can do both, but I’m just scared of not liking it at all.

does anyone have any advice?
