Job Offer Rescinded

So heres what happened. I had an offer in tax at a big 4 firm after my internship. My GPA at the time of recruitment was under 3.0 and I got in. Now a semester away from graduating and starting off they decided to rescind my FT offer. I currently carry a 2.7 but I'm not giving up. I always wanted to work in Finance anyways. Im applying and networking as much as I can. Investment banking is my goal. What is a good route for me to get into IB? Am i screwed with my gpa? I have 3 internships on my resume so that is going to help me. Any insight would help.

No I did not lie on my resume. Cant get it to a 3.0 with it being my last semester, too late. I have had a lot of family issues and deaths so its been hard to stay focused. Life Sucks! I was a transfer student from a community college where I held a 4.0 gpa. So I asked the career services office at my new university and they told me to list that under the community college education part because that was the only thing I had at the time, and as for the university gpa I put not available because when they were doing on campus recruiting it was during the fall semester which was my first semester on campus. I knew from the start that i wanted to work in finance but when such an opportunity like a big4 firm fell in my lap its kind of hard to turn down even if it is in tax. the company name weights more than no company at all. I mean that is my dream to be an IB but what sort of route do i have to take to get there?

Are there certain types of financial service industry jobs that i should target? Companies? Do i even have a chance of landing any kind of job with this kind of gpa? This obviously doesn't help my chances of getting into a good b-school for my masters. I'm a fighter and not giving up!

Recruitment from finance and IB start about now. Contact your career office to drop as many resume as you can for consideration. Make sure you put your GPA (overall and for your major) in your resume as all banks and finance companies want to see that listed or they won’t bother. I think IB is not happening for you, but apply to as many companies as possible (esp smaller companies) to cast a wider net. Good luck.

You should still be able to find a job! My GPA wasn’t great either when I graduated, but I found a job. In fact, I don’t think I was even asked what my GPA was in any of my interviews.

I’m confused - exactly when was the job offer? Did you accept it? Did you start filing paperwork?

Also, some people list their major GPA, which tends to be better.

Real experience always trumps GPA. If your totally blew away the internships with your work ethic, brilliance, results, etc. work on letters of recommendation. When IB companies are coming to recruit, use LinkedIn to get a recommendation in the hands of the recruiter or a hiring manager BEFORE the visit. Be sure to highlight to your contact how you want the recommendation to be slanted- of the hundred good things about you, what 3 do you want communicated. Then in the visit, your job with the college recruiter is to help him to connect the dots back to that hiring manager who has the recommendation from a trusted source within the industry. You will need to leverage the contacts made in your internships. I really hope they thought you were a stand-out! Good luck!
