also what is average salary?

Keep in mind that plans after graudation are not set in stone. hile so flock to to their friendly neighborhood IB in NYC, Chicago, etc, students work at non-profits, teach go to grad, school professional school etc. So the average salary is just what it is an average as they fluxuate with the job market and are dependent on what part of the country you live. If a person works in NYC at an IB with a starting salary of 75,000 and another works at a non profit for 30,000 and a third teaches for 30,000 then the average salary is $45,000.

Many of the internships and job placements are handled through the office of career services.

what kind of majors are recommended for the big consulting firms and investment banking firms like bain or lehman, etc. do a lot of dartmouth grad get jobs in this kind of firms?

Yeah, you can't do better than Dartmouth if you want to go into these fields with the possible exception of Princeton and Wharton.

That is the beauty of a liberal arts education you pick up critical thinking skills and the ability to write cogently all which are transferrable skills for any job you do.

I would suggest reading up on the process for recent undergrads at different IB's. At most IB's it is a 2 year analyst program you will start as a trainee and the company will teach you wnat they want you to know. (the exception may be Wharton which is virtually an IB mill)

I would suggest taking the where do I fit in quiz at GS, at the end you will be able to see profiles of employees at GS who attended different schools with differnt majors and ended up being successful

The great thing about dartmouth is depending on how you craft your D-plan you do have the opportunity to do internships almost a year earlier than your counterparts at other schools.

thank you so much.. i am going to be an 09.. but i am so confused i dont know what i want to study.. i really like the consulting and IB industry.. or big multi national companies. just because i am an international student and enjoy traveling a lot.. i would love to manage the latin american account since i am from latin america and i am a fluent spanish speaker.. i was just afraid because i dont really know if i would like to major in econ.. and i thought that was the only path towards a career in IB or consulting. i would love to talk more about this with you.. do you work in IB or consulting in nyc? is it much harder to get recruited being an int student.. what kind of gpa is required? thank you so much.

Prep,

I would suggest that you do their little quiz your self as it will open you up to the many different aspects of working for an IB.

I don't work for an IB or consulting firm but have over 25 years exp. working for a fortune 100 multinational corportation in a variety of functions raniging from operations, finance to HR (where the bulk of my experience is). I beleong to a few professional organizations and I'm good at research and networking (I told my D that all of that grad school paid off :)).
Through haveing a lived life, I have many close friends and colleagues who work in IB's, consulting and other walks of life that have allowed me to pick their brains (they pick mine about HR, training and teambulding so it's a good tradeoff).

Because the world is smaller and there are a slew of multinational companies that do recruit at Dartmouth including the IB's you should not have a problem getting a job after graduation. when you get to campus during orientation, you should definitely check out the career services office.

P.S. i took the where do I fit in test myself and I wasn't really suprised with the results I got (I now know my self pretty well but it's been a long journey) The results I got were based on my answers were:

Human Captial Management (big shocker :)
http://www.gs.com/careers/inside_goldman_sachs/business_snapshot/human_capital_management/index.html

Global Investment Research

Legal and Management Controls

thank you so much.. i am leaning towards a psychology and sociology minor.. i hope they do recruit from all majors.

Prep,

Just relax, as you still have a few years before you enter the work place and you will can't predict what the job market will be likel. Follow your passion because in the end everthing always works out.

Thanks for the replies. Would anyone know how Dartmouth is compared to other Ivies though?

Dartmouth a top feeder for the best post-graduate programs. It trails only HYP among the Ivies (Dartmouth is ranked above Columbia, Brown, Cornell & Penn.) From Wall Street Journal:
