My little brother who just turned 15, applied for a job to be a assitant manager at a building. He got the job. He has to collect rent, report any problems, etc. but he's 15. I'm not sure if the guy who hired him read his age. Doesnt my brother have to be 16 to get this kind of a job. (my brother is planned to work only 5 hours a week..basically coming in 5 hours to check up and collect rent once a month). Also..TAXES. My bro will be making 600 bux a month. Lets assume the law does allow him to have the job...how will he pay the taxes?

it kinda depends on your state...Texas allows youth to have jobs at 14, which I did, and I had taxes taken out of my checks like anyone else, but I got them mostly back

my brother and I live in california. any californios help me out?

If you lived in my area (North San Diego County), your brother would need to get a work permit from his high school to work, even during the summer. I think you need to be 16, although I believe you can get a waiver if you are younger. There may be certain requirements your school puts on getting a work permit--minimum GPA, for example. It's usually not much. He should check with his school (even in the summer, the office is usually open). My guess is that he doesn't want to check because he is afraid that the school won't issue him a permit.

As for paying taxes, is he being paid cash under the table or does his employer give him paychecks and withholds $$ for taxes?

As for filing taxes, anybody can file a tax form. It's real easy if you have a social security number. The government is more than happy to take your money.

your brother is making bank, just let him be.

bubblekid, i dont want him to take a job and break a law. we also live in los angeles

shrug...first find out if he is getting paid under the table, I started working at 16 and didn't need a permit, you might have to if he is 15, but not if he is getting paid under the table.

ok wait a minute, I just read he is working 5 hours a week, and getting 600 a month. something is seriously wrong here. that goes down to 30 dollars per hour, not many 15 year olds would make that sort of money, and I don't even believe a job like that would normally pay that much but maybe it is one of those ginormous apartment buildings...

I now would be suspicious if i were you...but if it is true that is damn good money.
