HS freshman or she wants to transfer to JHU?
She is a high school freshman.
Wow, she has a lot of time!
Hopkins does not have a “pre-med program,” per se. Anybody can decide to be premed, and all you have to do in that case is take the different science and math classes that are required by medical schools. Any student can make an appointment with the premed advisors and receive counseling as well.
As for how to get admitted into Hopkins, there really is no one set way. A good GPA and high SAT / ACT / Subject test scores will be a start; the average GPA for the class of 2018 was 3.88, but who knows how things will be in four years? ECs and volunteering are up to her, but they should reflect her interests and should reflect some kind of initiative, leadership, or commitment. These can really be anything, but if she’s premed, it would be great for her to start doing some shadowing doctors or volunteering in a hospital. I think awards, summer programs, and work experience are all nice, but not necessary.
My advice would be to not worry about applications for another few years because so much might change during that time. Just let her enjoy high school for now, and revisit this around her junior year.
I agree with the person above me, but have her get involved in volunteering/job shadowing/what-have-you now. But make sure it’s what she wants, because passion is important. It’ll become even more important if she decides to write an application essay about it.
