John Hopkins: Premed Cutthroat?

So i was looking at colleges to apply for for premed, and i came across many articles stating premed at John Hopkins is cutthroat and the grading is as hard as/ harder than that of the IVs. But then i looked at collegeboard.com and John Hopkins had a 21% admission rate, with 27% of students having a gpa between 3.5 and 3.74. Its admission rate was a lot higher than many IVs i looked at which were at 8%. Also, the gpa of all those IVs was over 3.74 (Yale and Harvard). So is John Hopkins really as hard grading wise as people say it is? I was considering three colleges in particular: John Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, and Duke, JHU had the highest acceptance rate, so i do not understand how the premed there is more vicious than Duke and University of Pennsylvania.

I’ve heard that John Hopkins is indeed quite cutthroat. That’s why my son decided to attend Johns Hopkins which he didn’t find to be cutthroat at all.

Johns Hopkins University is not cutthroat. And I find it incredibly insulting when the helpful and wonderful friends that make this school what it is for me are called cutthroat by completely unsupported rumors.

It is generally accepted that Ivies are extremely difficult to get into, but once you are past the gate, it becomes easier than the typical top non-ivy school. Hopkins seems brutal.

I’m international studies and it seems about in line with what my friends at Columbia, Harvard, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, etc. have as a work load.

Engineering can be a bit tougher, but considering Hopkins has a higher percentage of engineers / science majors than most other top schools, the difficulty factor might be skewed.

And no, Hopkins is not cutthroat. People are more than willing to help out on everything. Professors are great and accommodating. I am quite happy here.

You can make your life here as miserable or as easy as you wish. It’s really up to you.

I’m not sure what’s generally accepted, but it’s not hard to find out the truth. There’s some good data at this site:

[National Trends in Grade Inflation, American Colleges and Universities](http://www.gradeinflation.com/)

Some Ivies, like Princeton, grade more rigorously than non-Ivies like Duke. Grading at Johns Hopkins is more like Princeton than Duke, but the difference isn’t huge. In 2006 (the most recent data) the average GPA at JHU was 3.24, and at Duke it was 3.42. I’m not sure how it breaks down for pre-meds.

And as everyone has mentioned, the JHU “cutthroat” rumors are just that. From everything I have read, JHU was fairly cutthroat in the 1970’s, which is probably when many of the parents of today’s students were attending college. However it has changed a lot since then (for one thing, there are a lot more women on campus). Generally the pattern to these rumors is similar to the one on this thread:

1) Students who have actually attended JHU recently say it’s not cut-throat at all.
2) People who have not attended JHU recently think it’s brutal.
