Johns Hopkins Class of 2025 Waitlist Discussion

This was my original question:
Hello there,
I was wondering if there was some sort of update you could give on the waitlist for undergraduate students? As it is late June at this point, I would think there is some sort of information you could give on the status of the waitlist. For example, are you planning on using it this cycle? Thank you for your time and help.

And this was their response which I already posted:
HI,
Haven’t heard anything as of yet about the waitlist students.

And this is my reply I haven’t heard back yet but will update if I do:
Thank you for the update! I wonder why you haven’t heard anything, do you think it’s because they are planning on not using the waitlist this year? If not, then why not close the waitlist? Thanks so much for your help. It means a lot!

Thanks so much for letting us know, could you keep us updated if they respond? We rlly appreciate this!

ok they replied this is what they said!:
“I think they are trying to see how many spots they have from admits changing their minds. Sorry it is taking so long to get your waitlist decision. Hopefully soon”

so I guess we know why it’s taking so long I think this is sort of positive because it means they are actively considering the waitlist and people might be withdrawing their enrollment maybe for other waitlists? im not sure how to respond yet bc I want to get as much information as possible so ill update you guys when I do

feel free to give me questions you guys want me to ask since they are being kind of cooperative

Wow that’s actually pretty good news! Thank you so much for keeping us in the loop, I really feel like you guys are my friends and we’ve bonded because of this haha. Also I’m assuming this is the JHU email or is it your admissions officer? Either way, this is the most amount of info they’ve provided us with in awhile!

Maybe something like, “do you know how many spots there are open potentially” or “are admissions officers currently reviewing files?” “How does JHU notify waitlist decisions is it through email, phone call, portal change?” Also, this is a bit of a stretch to ask but are they prioritizing anything in particular such as location or major? Again thank you so much for your help, you’re the GOAT!

yeah me too! it’s nice having someone to talk to about this and it’s this email: apphelp@jhu.edu my AO was super vague and kind of cold when I asked for an update

no problem! ill ask a combination of those questions and let you know the response when it comes!

Thank you so much for asking! And yes it’s good that they finally responded with some kind of info.

This might be tough to hear, but waitlist admits if any this year will be very low.

At this point, they are waiting on summer melt, which is when others might change their minds due to waitlist decisions elsewhere. Historically, when this happens, the waitlist use has been close to 0.

This class unfortunately has less regular spots than normal because of COVID deferments and the introduction of Early Decision 2 which further increases yield.

Yield has also gone up tremendously with Bloomberg’s donation which makes Hopkins financial aid packages better than a lot of ivies.

It’s more constructive to focus on your second choice at this point, but I understand the need for closure.

yeah I think we all know that I don’t understand what you thought you were doing with this but I think pretty much everyone here has been realistic and hopeful at the same time. the two can coexist.

this might be difficult to hear, but coming to a waitlist thread where kids come to talk about a very confusing and difficult part of the college application process and saying something they have all heard and know is really really weird?

Providing some insight actually. I think you’re a little too defensive to grasp that.

See the thing is, a lot of schools at least sent out a message to their waitlisted students letting them know that they’ve reached their target, even if they didn’t close the waitlist entirely. Or they rejected most and put some on an extended waitlist. Comparing this behavior to Hopkins’, I can’t really draw the conclusion that Hopkins will not pull anyone at all from the waitlist. There is simply no reason to keep EVERYONE on it if they don’t intend on using it. It could be just a few acceptances, but until the chance of being accepted is zero we have a reason to hope, especially when they’ve given us so little info to go off of.

That being said, I’m pretty much just in this for closure at this point…I don’t know if I would even go here if given an acceptance.

Guys, can we expect something today since this is the last week of June and usually JHU releases decisions on Friday. Someone also mentioned earlier that they would be releasing transfer waitlist decisions mid July…

Apparently not…

Just don’t get your hopes up too high in anticipation of their response. At the end of the day, it’s probably going to be some ambiguous statement about a “tumultuous year,” “exceeding volume,” and “unforeseen adjustments” that will offer you minimal closure and paltry satisfaction. Your attitude is completely up to you. That being said, I predict that their response will arrive in the middle of next week, or at the latest, the end of the coming week. Please embrace your “second-choice institutions” because of the simple fact that they chose you out of so many students that applied.

Worst case, just try and transfer to another school.

Honestly who knows what we’ll here back whether good or bad. A lot of places are starting to close without adding a single person or very few people. So knows what direction JHU might take. Hopefully a good one!

Nothing I say necessarily has any backing to it, but considering the amount of people I’ve met who were on waitlists previous years, I really do believe at least some of yall will get off the waitlist.

Either way, I don’t think it’s appropriate to come onto a thread full of 17/18 year olds who are already stressed about this, and make them more stressed. Everyone here knows that they might not get off the waitlist and many of yall have already mentioned that you’ll be happy either way, which is a great mindset to have.

That being said, I do hope to see all of yall at Hopkins next year, you’ve already made your own community within this thread and I think yall have the potential to thrive here.

Additionally, this might be useful to yall? but incoming freshmen have class registration on July 22nd, so if I were to guess, you’ll probably hear back by then

Ah also! If you don’t get off the waitlist but decide to pursue transferring into Hopkins, PM me at that time and I’ll see if I can get anyone I know that transferred here to give you tips
