So according to bruinwalk..none of these teachers are exceptionally good...frankly none are good at all, but which one would be most bearable? or should i hold off on taking the LS series this quarter whatsover with these teachers?

I have yet to have a good LS teacher.

PHELAN!!! He is an awesome LS teacher.

he's not teaching next quarter..

when does phelan teach? i want him as a prof... i'm planning to take ls 3 winter quarter, but this depends on the prof.

bannana_girl, you can't take LS3 or 4 without finishing 2 first so you don't have to worry about the other professors.

I had Schein for LS2 and I thought he was awesome (articulate and organized). There are clicker questions in class so that forces you to keep up. That class was all about keeping up, mostly fact-recall on the exams with some critical thinking. Be prepared to work though and don't let stuff pile up.

LS 2-4 really doesn't depend too much on the professor. if the professor is too easy (i.e. johnson) then the curve will be close to non-existent (straight scale). if the professor is fairly challenging (i.e. lin) then the curve will be really nice, but you'll have to be in the dark until the very end.

i personally liked johnson (LS4) because it was VERY possible to get the 90% on her midterms and finals that would surely guarantee you at least an A-, so there was no guessing about your grade at the end of the course. Lin (LS3) had fairly low averages, and you never really knew your grade until it came up on myucla.

as for those specific professors, johnson is very good at lecturing and has extremely fair (borderline easy) exams. The other LS4 professor for spring 08 was diener and their class had much lower averages. One LS professor i would stay away from is merriam (can't lecture and has very hard exams)

this may vary for everyone, but which ls is the most difficult and why? i'm planning to take johnson for ls 3 this winter and possibly ls 4 in the spring depending on who teaches it.

You might as well just go with whatever fits in your schedule - as far as profs go, I've had Pires (LS2-A), Campbell (LS3-B+), and Diener (LS4 - A so far). All of their exams have been fairly difficult. In terms of ranking lecturers, Pires was the best (although she had the annoying clickers) and way way behind were Campbell and Diener, Campbell is extraordinarily dry and his exams are pretty picky (good TAs help), since I'm currently taking Diener I'm trying to figure him out. I feel like Diener doesn't understand that what's easy for him needs much more time in the students. I did awesome on the first midterm, but have been lost since (woo catchup time this weekend). The LS-4 material has been the most interesting, didn't like the beginning of LS3 that much, and LS-2 was a rehash of AP bio so I was pretty over it.

So whats the verdict? Pires or ARNOLD, A.P. / BOK, P.D. for LS2?
