Hey! I've heard that it looks bad to colleges if you join a bunch of clubs during your junior year because it seems as if your just trying to add more to your application, but what if you're at a new school and want to get more involved?

Like for me...

Freshman Year (High School #1):
Key Club
Japanese Culture Club (I really only joined this because I had friends in that club)

Sophomore Year (High School #2):
Key Club
Indo-South Asian Club

Junior Year (High School #3):
Key Club
South Asian Club
Neuroscience Club
Sewing Club (A lot of my new friends are in this club ^_^)
MESA
National Honor Society (I wanted to join this last year but I didn't know when we were supposed to sign up. :/)

If I'm able to show that I'm genuinely dedicated to these clubs will it still seem as if I just joined them to add more to my college application? Truth is I've always wanted to join some of these things but never really got the chance because of moving and switching schools and other things.

You will hear a lot of things about applying to college that are announced as if they are great, unyielding truths, but they are actually nonsense.

This is nonsense–with maybe a smidgen of truth at its core.

If you suddenly join a gazillion clubs, but you never really do anything substantive while you’re involved with them, then that will look like exactly what it is: padding. And it will not impress admissions officers. But it won’t look “bad” in the same way that getting suspended or getting a D in your English class would look “bad.”

But, really, credit admissions officers with a little common sense. If you’re starting a new school, you’re going to become involved in new school clubs and activities. And you might reasonably try new things because they weren’t available in your old school, or because that’s where you can get to know the people you think you’re likely to be friends with in your new school. Get involved in clubs that interest you, make a contribution, and stop thinking so hard about this ridiculous stuff.

risbu: I was at a different school last year that had an Indo-South Asian Club and this year at my new school they have a South Asian club…it’s the same thing really.
