Can students not enrolled at Medill still take journalism courses? I'm very interested in journalism but didn't want to commit to Medill.

On a similar note, do Medill students dominate the student publications at Northwestern?

A) There are Medill classes that don’t block other students from registering, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a damned hard time getting into them as a non-Medill person. They will likely fill up in pre-reg, and many of them have large portions reserved for students who need the classes for their degree or concentration. It would take some serious professor-coddling (or perhaps having friends hold spots for you) and even then I wouldn’t count on it happening too regularly.

B) Most of them are staffed by Medill people, but I think that’s more because Medill people are the ones who apply than that they don’t take people outside of Medill. So if you’re worried about being shut out of campus media because you’re not in Medill, don’t be.

Thanks, that helps. Definitely something I will have to think about…
