Journalism internship: La or nyc

where is it easier to get a journalism internship?
Los angeles? [USC] or new york city [NYU]

I transfered to NYU my sophomore year as an economics and poli sci double major. My experiences getting internships so far has been quite good. I’m currently interning at CNN in the Time Warner Building on Columbus Circle, in fact I’m answering this question from my desk, Poppy Harlow is doing a shoot about 25 feet away from my desk, and I just finished working on a shoot and just walked out of the control room about 15 minutes ago.

This summer I’m working at NBC Universal in the infamous GE building at 30 rockafeller plaza with NBC News specials

I’m already preparing for the Fall, and have my eyes on working either at the UN, the Daily Show, or the Council on Foriegn Relations.

I can’t speak for USC and LA, but if you’re at NYU you can intern all year round if you like when it’s less competitive during the school year and scoop up whatever position you want during the summers because you’re almost always the strongest candidate.

can u even get internships in freshman/sophomore year?
i was doing research on the big media outlets like cnn, cbs, etc and most are “senior/junior status”

u cant get internship unless uve finished your sophomore year…thats what i heard

Most major companies don’t take interns unless you’ve completed your sophomore year. Some take sophomores but that’s rare. However there are still plenty of smaller companies that are always willing to take on underclassmen. If you go to NYU get involved with writing for Washington Square News, the student newspaper, or NYU Local.

Strategically pick important extracurriculars relating to journalism, and the particular subject of choice you’re interested in covering. If you want to do political journalism join the International Relations Society, write an article for one of the undergrad research journals, and join up with the college democrats (or republicans…).

You could land an internship with Congressman Nadler, Rangel, or Congresswoman Maloney your second semester of your freshman year if you interview well. Working in a congressman’s office is a great first internship for a lot of different fields. It gives you a lot of options, and stands out on a resume.

New York gives you a ton of options. If you spend your freshman year building your credentials and finished with a reasonably high GPA, 3.5 or higher, You can expect during your sophomore year to start interning at some pretty awesome places.

NYC has many more publications and media outlets.
