Journalism Schools

Hi, I am a junior in high school and I am trying to map out my college choices but I am curious which I actually have a chance of getting into. Right now my top five choices are the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, Northwestern Medill school, NYU Journalism school, University of California Berkeley Journalism school, Washington and Lee and University of Maryland. Can anyone tell me what my chances would be at theses schools?
I want to be a magazine editor and novelist, don't tell me it is a dying industry because I am too passionate about writing to let it go.

NWU Medill: Reach
Berkeley: Reach (although much less of a reach than NWU)
Syracuse Newhouse: Match
NYU: Low reach
W&L: High match/reach
UMD: Low match

@catria thank you for the reply, although I am a bit confused how Newhouse is more of a match for me then NYU which is easier to get into as far as journalism goes?

NYU journalism: High match
Syracuse Newhouse: High match

What’s your problem with U Missouri as a J-school?

I haven’t considered University of Missouri very much because I want to be in a place where the best internships are close by. I know that Missouri’s J-school is one of the best and maybe even the best in some areas but the location makes it hard for me to consider.

Regardless I will apply there, I have some friends who are in the J-School and love it. If I get declined at my other options then I’ll choose between there and Texas University.

Do you think there is anything I should be doing before the end of junior year to increase my chances of getting into Newhouse or NYU, I am under the impression I have the slimmest chance of being accepted.

I went to Mizzou’s J-School and it’s very good, but journalism is a dead profession. Best to consider majoring in “communications” or “marketing” and go into PR. Newspapers are dying, magazines and even local TV are laying people off by the thousands.

I am planning on double majoring in Computer Science and Magazine Writing, regardless of the “dying industry” everyone warns me about I can’t help but feel like I have to write for a living. Just because it is what I am passionate about, maybe it sounds corny but I think when someone finds something they want to do regardless of the pay check they should pursue it.
