Journalism Schools

Yes. I believe that's the case. Some people who are not sure about journalism and like Northwestern a lot apply to Weinberg (college of arts and sciences) because they think Medill is tougher to get in. I am not so sure about that. As far as SAT average goes for class of 2007, Weinberg's was higher. Weinberg's average was V 695, M 713 (total: 1408) while Medill's average was V 705, M 679 (total: 1384).

ohio university-athens has an amazing journalism school and the university itself is beyond description

Thanks, Sam Lee :-D.

Michigan State Univ's J-School is consistently among the top 5 or 10. It's home, the 50-year-old, College of Communication Arts and Sciences, is the nation's oldest.

The Oldest Journalism school in the world is the University of Missouri-Columbia, founded by Walter Williams. He changed it from a trade to a profession.

Syracuse's Newhouse School of Communications is one of, if not the best one around, some examples of Newhouse grads (not all are journalists), Ted Koppel, Dick Clark, Mike Tirico, Dick Stockton, Bob Costas, Sean McDonaugh (sp?) of espn, there are others but I can think of them right now.

The Newhouse School is consistenly considered one of the foremost communications schools in the country.

about Syracuse.... I understand (could be wrong) that its more known for broadcast journalism. I'm primarily interested in print journalism. is the program for print journalism just as good?

Also, I hear it snows tons in Syracuse, which I don't think I could handle. i know this should not be a big factor...but I'm from hawaii! Anybody from up there have anything to say about the weather??

Yeah...be prepared for lots of snow in Syracuse thats for sure! I'm actually applying to Syracuse for a PhD program in a field nowhere near journalism (geology)...so I don't know the answer to that question...

Syracuse receives an average of 115 inches of snow yearly. If you can't handle snow (& cloudy days) this may not be the place for you. However, as mentioned previously, Newhouse is truly a highly ranked, prestigious communications school - not only for all forms of journalism, but for graphic design, public relations etc. They are highly selective in their admissions process and have an incredibly strong alumni base.

Actually, the 115 number has been well below what Syracuse received the past couple years...two years ago it received over 180 inches of snow and last year it got over 150 inches. That 115 inch average does in fact make Syacuse the snowiest city of 100,000 or more people in the entire US. Fun times... :-)

Syracuse has an excellent print journalism school as well as broadcast. Both of some of the best journalism schools in the country. But if you can't handle cold, snow, and gray, then Syracuse probably isn't the place for you.
