Journalism

I was accepted into the Journalism program at Maryland, but how good is the actual program? Does it take full advantage of DC being so close?

Any current Merrill students out there? I was accepted for Broadcast.

Same question...come on kids...answer

I know a lot of journalism students doing major internships both during the summer and the school year. My friend currently work MWF as an intern with the Washington Times and gets published about once a week. I have other friends writing for local papers (The Gazette and others), so yeah there are a lot of opportunities that MD students get from being close to DC.

My S is a freshman in journalism. He's not that far into the program yet, just the one fall class and now a spring class. I think it'll be more hands-on next year and after that. Sorry, that wasn't much help.

I was a journalism student at UMD, finished last spring. the program is fantastic but very rigorous. They definitely prepare you for the real world of journalism....I know that now! It does take advantage of DC being so close. I did two internships with ABC News's DC affiliate, and the majority of interns there were from Maryland. Plus, Maryland has a nightly newscast, 'Capital News Service', and you'll be working in DC if you join that. Congratulations on being admitted to the college. It's very competitive. Enjoy and work hard!
