Julliard’s drama BFA has an acting emphasis, but they do have vocal and movement classes for the Drama majors. Would it be a good option for someone who wants a Musical theatre career? Do they provide an option for private vocal lessons for their drama students? And can drama students take other dance/voice electives?
I could see it being a better option to go to a traditional MT program, and have Julliard lower on the list(and yes I’m aware it’s an insanely competitive school haha).
The singing component of the auditions is to sing a bit of a song acapella. You need 4 monologues prepared. So this may tell you about where their priority lays. They make cuts as the day goes on. They say be prepared to stay until midnight but many get cut at lunch. Hope this helps.
If your focus is truly musical theater, Juilliard isn’t your best option.
From what I understand, there’s no time in the schedule (avg 12-13 hours per day, six days per week between classes and rehearsal) to do much outside of your mandatory classes, and I don’t believe acting students have electives at all, at least for studio classes.
I think most of the Julliard alum who do musicals are out of the vocal performance program (Philipa Soo, Sheree Pimental)… so the question is really what kind of training does your student want?
Philipa Soo was an acting student, not VP, at Juilliard.
@soozievt whoops! Yes you’re correct! I must have remembered it incorrectly, also her voice is soo good!
