Jumbo Days

I am aware of the information posted on the website, but could anyone go in detail about the days. In particular, I am wondering about the Academic experience part. By the way, congratulations to all of those accepted and I hope to see all of you on campus!

bump…

The academic experience last year was being able to go to 2-3 classes. These classes were taught by top profs and were basically a lecture on an interesting topic for the parents and students. They claimed they ran these classes the way they run their typical class.

Well, the way they run typical lecture classes, anyway.

I think the schedule for the day was up somewhere online, under the admitted student webpages. I thought an admitted student in the FB group for 2017 posted it. Are you a parent or student?

Last year at one class we attended- the highlight was meeting you Dan in person.

Shucks! Y’all gonna make me blush.

@Dan, I am a student and I have seen the schedule. What classes are there to choose from? Do students attend events that are separate from parents or are they all mixed? Lastly, could anyone go into more detail about staying on campus the night before. ( their experiences or Dan can go into what to expect) Also, can I still stay overnight if my plane does not land until 7 o’clock that night?

There’s generally a good mix of classes from every major academic area, and this year there are some academically oriented panels added in additional to the class offerings. There are two sessions, each with a different spread of classes.

Most students stay with their parents, but I think there’s probably more benefit to splitting up and reconnecting. But, that’s up to you and yours.

I’ve never done an overnight, so you’ll have to get help from someone with more experience than I on what to expect, but you can still do one if you get in later, you’ll just have to figure out how you meet your host on your own.

My child is going to stay in the dorm Thursday night and then we’ll attend the Friday activities. Neat1837 - her email said she could arrange with the student if she wouldn’t be there before 6.

I have a question - do you think there’s value in staying on campus or leaving at the close of the program (is it 4?). I’m concerned about leaving at that time since then we’ll hit rush hour pretty much all the way home. Do the admitted students generally find value in staying a second night in the area?

Should parents come? Are there things for them to do throughout the day or is it more off a drop-off/pick-up kind of thing?

We split up and then reported what we thought of the classes. Some classes filled up. I’m not a big fan of the special lecture “just like a regular class” format, but I did enjoy the lecture I went to.

Also how does the school determine what student someone rooms with for the overnight visit? Is it chosen by interests or is it completely random?

Neat1837: My freshman violin playing daughter (from San Diego) hosted last semester and got a cello playing girl from San Diego! Her hall mates who also hosted got kids from their respective hometown areas too. So it does appear that they somewhat match you up if they can- otherwise it was an awful lot of coincidences! Definitely stay overnight- you will love it! You have dinner with your host and sleep on the floor of their dorm (hopefully they will have an air mattress!), and there are fun activities for you and the other prospectives in the evening! My daughter and her hall mates already signed up to host again and are SO EXCITED TO MEET YOU ALL!!

@Tolstoy2, Thank you for responding, I signed up last week to stay overnight and I am very excited. While I doubt I will get someone from my area as there are only two current students from my state (Arkansas), both of which are girls (I am a boy), however both actually attended the high school I currently attend so I have a distant connection to them. With that being said, I hopefully will end up with an IR major, also can you tell me a little about the activities.

Attended jumbo days yesterday and it was amazing! My host and his roommates were kind and very helpful. Also every student I encountered walking around on campus was eager to help me and I honestly did not see an unhappy student on campus. Also the lectures I attended were outstanding. I can’t wait to join the Tufts community next fall!

My daughter attended last week’s Jumbo Day. A wonderful experience. She made friends faster than she would have imagined (they met up the night before at the hotel), had all her positive preconceptions validated after attending fascinating classes in Classical History and Biology, and after meeting so many smart, engaged, approachable students (and admissions folks).

That could be me, maybe!

Okay, BINGO!!!
