i use the exact same method of tackling cr as asc3nd. it is very useful but you have to practice it a lot because its sort of a time drain. make sure you make good judgment when you choose a question. never think, screw it, i’ll just put down this answer. i have found that on cb tests, there have been very specific justifications in the text for each correct answer. i got 800 on the march sat cr (just in case you wanted any credentials.) that cr method is very effective. marking the passage (underlining or bracketing) with the line numbers from the questions first is extremely helpful and helps you get a rhythm of skim-focus.

lol this is cute!! good luck.

Thanks for the advice / comments. Im taking a full SAT tmr, so I’ll try to use the marking method. I’ll update when I know. Thanks again.

For math, realize that on the actual SAT, if you get 4 or 5 wrong (or even omit 5), your score will be below a 700, so even if you’re confident now, keep doing those math problems! If you’re aiming for a 750+, try to get all (no omits! an omit in math can make the difference between an 800 and 780) math questions right in 3 different tests.

For CR, I usually read the passage once, and then answer all of the questions I can after one reading. For the remaining questions, if they gave a line number, I reread that line and try to answer the question. For double passages, I read one passage, answer the questions, and then read the other. This method might not work for you (asc3nd’s method might work better for you–I tend to get confused if I read the questions first, and it takes me longer), but it worked for me; I got an 800 in CR on my first SAT.

But for CR, find the method for reading comprehension that works for you. Don’t waste time memorizing vocabulary words–the passages are the bulk of the CR section, and if you’re good at reading comprehension, you’ll be able to figure out some of the fill-in-the-blanks based on context. To practice reading comprehension, do all of the reading passages and questions in any prep book you may have (doesn’t matter if it’s SAT, GRE, SSAT, or AP English because while the difficulty of the questions may differ, they’re all going to build your skills). Reading general books and magazines will also help, but they don’t have the questions afterwards, and building your skills in searching for answers within the passages is key.

Hope this helped!

Good post VFrizz.

Many people say reading magazines helps CR skills, but the simpe efact is, if you just read it it’s not gonna help. You have to go beyond the reading, and that’s what i’ve started to do.

Every week I get The Economist. In the March 22nd-28th issue, I read the main article, and highlighted every word that I didn’t know. In total there were 26 words (edifice, staved, asunder, folly, conduits etc.) that I didn’t know.
I went and looked them up, and I realized how much this helped. Generally I tend to memorize vocab just by looking at it, but now by reading it in context I can recognize it without “trying to remember what the word means.”
Also it makes more sense to me when its being used in context (and it STAVED off the outright catastrophe of a bank failure that had threatned to split Wall Street ASUNDER.)

The next thing that I want to do is read the passage and paraphrase each paragraph in one-two lines. This way I am making sure that I understand what I am reading, and improves my CR comprehension.

Night-before-test:
- I’m getting some sleep. I heard it is wise to.
- Reviewed past mistakes for maybe 20 minutes
- Maybe I’ll eat some yogurt…
- Thanks for the support.

Goals for tmr:
- Get at LEAST high 600s on math
- CR, get one section only missing 1 – will use marking technique*
- writing: blah.

good luck!! dont make careless errors =)

i got my ass kicked. update later.

ok, so I didn’t die. Just been busy. Balancing school + SAT is hard as hell. Some updates: That practice SAT, i received (averages) 640W, 610CR, 600M.

Missed: 1
FInished: 8:05

4 (common tense error) (improving paragraphs.)

Math:
-missed 4
score: 49 => 680-740

Crital Reading:
-missed 16
score: 47 => 580-640

Writing:
-missed 10
score: 39 => 630-730

Lowest score: 1890
Highest score: 2110
Average: 2000

My goal was 2000, but mehhh. Its not the 2000 that I want. My goal of 2000 would be my lowest combined scores will reach 2000.

CR is definately the weakest for now.
dominated last writing section
get that math up

Goals:
-1950+ (lowest combined)
-get CR score up

Until then.

what i do for CR is just read the passage like it is a short story, no rushing or skimming. Then when I get to the questions, I can usually remember the tone or whatever the question asks for.
It works pretty well for me, I usually get in the upper 700s, but my friend tried it and got in the low 600s, so i guess it doesn’t work for everyone.

I see. I’ll try to put that into perspective. I’ve found that I dont’ feel comfortable skipping around or else I can’t ge tthe story. I need to read the entire thing. Ultimately, I just need to get used to the questions.

ha i love this thread. keep it up. Take test 3 alrdy!!

lol thanks for the encouragement. i’ve been lazy to post. i haven’t been doing too well on test 3. but i’ll post this weekend or tmr when i got time. thanks for commenting sushant

hehe no problemo. I’ve been wanting to see something like this for SOO long. This has encouraged me to take BB tests and stuff too. I mean, i felt lazy and needed to see other ppls takes on the Xiggi method step by step. Thank you for the encouragement!

thanks for the support. I im now starting to find the CR sections not that hard, espeically the long passages. The most questions im getting wrong is the short passages.. which is odd. But this is my 3rd test, and I feel the improvement in the CR. writing, im alwasy trying to do good but im not trying as hard.

hehe thats great. So xiggi method DOES have good effects? I am gonnna START using it and take my first practice test this sunday :] Hopefully i ll do as well as you (cuz i did TERRIBLY WHEN I TOOK IT FOR REALS) and i ll post my results in here as well for fun :]

cool. I’ve actually done 3 total and in the progress of my 4th SAT from the BB. THe first 2 i had to split up separately b/c of school, so I had no time. The third one I took it with time all at once. And on my 4th right now, i’m splitting up again, but I need to take a full one this weekend to strengthen my endurance.

Just remember Xiggi’s method isn’t 100% gauranteed. It depends on you a lot, to actually CRITICALLY read, and learn, etc. You’ll learn a lot if u just do it dilegently. Do it for school readings, do it for everything.
Just read, it does help with speed, etc.

howd u do on test 3?
