June 14th SSAT

Who' s taking the June SSAT this coming Saturday? My D is, she is just finishing up 7th grade, and is taking the upper school test - basically as a practice. We don't want her making any stupid mistakes, like filling in the wrong section, etc. She will take it again in the fall or winter later this year, for admissions. Some are taking it for admissions this fall, and will have completed 8th grade instead of 7th.

Ill be taking the test this saturday. I just finished the 8th grade and im applying late to one of my schools.

Walden - are you still applying to MPS ?

yes, i set up my interview and submitted my application last week.

My 7th grade dd will also be taking the Upper Level test this Saturday.

She decided seemingly last minute to apply to an online HS that requires a standardized test, so she's taking the test with less than a week's notice, and she is STRESSED. :-(

Quite a difference from the usual annual state tests.

Hard Knocks
I bet she is stressed.

This is a busy time of year, my D has tons of homework and studying from her public middle school, plus final exams.

This is an unusual test. Wonder how many 7th graders are going to be taking the upper level ?

It'd definitely be interesting to have the median breakdown for 7th graders.

So the perfectionist called my dd is frustrated that she can't immediately answer all the math questions, and that there are many vocabulary words she doesn't know on the practice tests.

We're having the report sent just to the home so we can decide if its good enough to forward on.

My S is completing the 7th grade and will take the upper level on 6/14 as a "practice test" Has been preparing for a while; SSAT Prep is a mandatory elective (a contridiction?) for all seventh graders in his school and they've used the upper level as a guide throughout the year. After this, it's on to November for the go-live version.

Ditto on using this as a practice test, and then taking officially in November. The SSAT people told me because this is the last test of this year my D will not show up as a multiple tester when her scores are sent next year. Good to know.

nylcoj - thats interesting that your s has been preparing for the test through his school. Thats probably another advantage of private middle school!
Here in MA the public schools have to teach for the state MCAS, and this takes away from the regular work, so now all my D's teachers are scrambling just to finish up the regular course load on time. On top of that she has final tests. No possible chance for her to prepare for this SSAT.

Hope the poor kid gets to relax this summer! ( Kidding -I'll make sure she does!)

relax?!? they can relax when they retire! :)

heheee:)

My mother and sister think I'm pushing her, because she's really the most workaholic kid in our family. I don't. Pushing my kids backfires on me anyway. Lucky for her, she got all the executive functioning that should have been spread around to the rest of us.
I'm off to the beach now:)

My daughter took the SSAT today. She says math was easier then she expected, vocabulary and reading was not difficult, but the analogy section was very hard. She said she skipped several of the analogy questions and guessed on a few others.

Well mine came out with a long face. She said the opposite - the analogy was the easiest. She guessed some of the others.

I wonder what percentage of kids taking the upper level test today are just finishing 8th grade as opposed to 7th ? Also, do they grade it against todays testers only or against testers from multiple test dates?

They are ranked against all students of the same gender and grade that you indicated on the registration who have taken the SSAT within the past three years.

I would guess that most of the kids who took the test today are doing it for the same reason as you D - as practice, and are just finishing seventh grade, unless, of course, they are applying late.

Based only on what I've read on cc, my understanding is that the test is scored against other girls in her grade, who have taken the test over the past three years. At our site today there were only four people taking the test. The administrator said that is typical for where we live.

My kid said the hardest part was that he couldn't help glancing at his watch every three questions. He said analogies were kinda crazy. I know from past experiences, they've always been his weak link. Other than that, he said it was "pretty good". He manages to put a positive spin on everything. We'll see how it goes.

I thought the analogy section was by far the easiest followed by math. I actually thought reading was the hardest..

Is there a breakdown for 7th graders taking the Upper Level? Or are they lumped with the 8th graders? In the one practice book we reviewed, it showed the medians for 8th-11th graders.

To my knowledge, rankings for 7th graders taking the upper are not done. I don't know how the ssat people would handle that. They may simply issue raw and scaled scores. I don't know. I am interested in finding out, however. Sadie could perhaps let us know when the score reports come in?

I'm very curious to know too. The results will be mailed July 2. As said before, this is somewhat of an odd test date.
