A raw score of 80? But there were only 75 on this test. If it's different for every test, then we can't get too hopeful about the curve =(

But I hope the curve is as friendly as it seems.

I'm just hoping for a 650+ to pass out of a lang requirement...will be overjoyed if over that, and dancing around my house if over 700

if not, i'll prob retake in january

sorry guys, that was supposed to be 66-75.

Haha, that's okay.

Anon_Person, the Latin test is only offered June and December.

We should do a list of answers, like they did on other Subject Test threads...does anyone actually remember any of them?

^ that's what i meant, hah...i knew it was only offered 2x, and it was a winter month

The first question was the accusative singular of pater, I think, but I don't remember many others.

they're hard to remember since they're not in english. I, myself, don't understand half of them so... lol

So, how did we do?

I got a 680.

650! I'm really happy about this! Passes out of a certain college's language requirement, so now i just have to get in :p

it's sort of hilarious that this is my worst as I'm known as a "latin whiz" at my school & not known for US or Lit

congrats placidia, too!

I got a 700. Not amazing, but good enough for me.

Congrats, guys!

Somewhat disappointing, but I can live with it.

My daughter got a 680. She's happy enough with it. She'd only just finished her 3rd semester of a Latin correspondence course, but had to take the test in June since it won't be offered again until next Dec., too late for her purposes. I think a 680 with 3 semesters of Latin is pretty awesome.

And it takes care of a language requirement she had to meet.

Princeton U's cutoff for most language SATs, even Latin, is 740, and I'd say that schools of comparable caliber have similar cutoffs.

What do you guys and gals study in your Latin classes? Do you learn culture and history along with the language?

I nearly aced the exam, but that's because in Latin I and II, we focused entirely on grammar and working through all 40 chapters of the Wheelock.

People call me a "Latin scholar," but I only scored between 10-30 points higher than my classmates.

Yeah, we do culture and history with the language. It's a waste of time, really, since our teacher knows nothing about them.

We use Ecce (finally got done with the second book at the end of Latin 3, ugh!), so we still are missing bits of grammar (e.g. gerunds/gerundive, supines, a slew of ablative uses) and have only worked with the ridiculously easy Ecce translations.

well, my teacher is focused on grammar mostly...however, we have the honors class and the regular in one big class. It's basically hell-the people who failed spanish in middle school decided to take latin for fun. They just disrupted class, etc. We barely finished the 60 chapters in whichever book we had (it's not ecce or wheelock; it's pretty famous though). To give you an example, the honors class in 2nd year CAUGHT UP with my honors/regular class in terms of material.

However, we're just doing hardcore poetry and translation senior year, so my score would improve if I wanted to retake.

kwu, I think you're sort of dead wrong about requirements.

Some Ivies
Penn-650
Harvard-600

the only other high one i've seen is 781+ for Barnard.

Thanks for the congrats, Anon_Person. And congrats to you too for getting out of language requirements! Where are you planning to go?

It's not even possible to score a 781 haha. So a 780 wouldn't make it? That's tough!

kwu:
I don't learn much in class. Latin 1 was okay, I self-studied Latin 2 over the summer, first part of Latin 3 was okay but my teacher spiraled off into senility, I skipped Latin 4, and AP was a joke. Here is what I did in 'class' throughout my years of Latin:

Grammar - memorization of verb/noun endings, declensions, conjugations, nothing more complex than imperfect subjunctive

Vocab - sporadic lists taken from our text, Cambridge Latin Course

Sight reading - None.

Translation - assigned, but almost never checked/corrected; many classmates just copied and pasted off the Cambridge Latin Course website

Projects - We did one in Latin 1. We were supposed to do one for Latin 3, and I finished it early, but she never remembered it and it was never collected.

What I learned: How to self-study and score decently on the SAT II. Now I'm awaiting my AP grade!!!!

@AnonPerson1:

Harvard and Penn are joke schools, obviously :)

Princeton: 740
Yale: 4/5 on AP or Placement Test
Columbia: 5s on BOTH Literature and Vergil or Placement Test
Cornell: Dept. Exam
Dartmouth: Placement Exam

I do like how Barnard's policy was created specifically to screw me, however.

Wow at the Latin curricula, though...

Did anyone here take both the Latin subject test and the AP exam?

My scores didn't really match. I had a 680 on the SAT, which made me worried about the AP, but I got a 5 on Literature. Which score will adcoms weigh more? I've heard that the AP is more 'prestigious' than SAT II, is that true?

Some schools don't even count the Literature exam for credit, in the same way that English Language is often uncredited. You should consult the prospecti of the colleges to which you plan to apply. Also, nota bene, the Literature exam will be discontinued starting next year.

Since the AP exam is much more difficult and extensive, and tests your actual ability to read original text, I'd imagine it carries more weight than the SAT II. Nearly every one of them carries an extremely generous curve, however, and they are much easier to earn a good grade on.

However, if you're applying to top national universities and LACs, it helps to have exceptionally high SAT scores.

Your 5 proves your ability to read Latin literature well, and dispels any damage, if any, your 680 will do, but a 680 is still a 680. It's a good score.
