June 2010: Literature

Oh my, I didn’t get that at all… agh, so far I’m at -2, hopefully no more than that though :(

I was confused because the sentence went something like, “the taboos were such and such that the South Sea Gods in the museum would feel they were back at home?” Which threw me off. o_o

Some other questions from my memory…

Mabel&LordWhatever
-What is Mabel’s style of saying things?
-Why would her accepting Tommy’s proposal teach both of them good manners? Something like that
-What does she mean with her saying that she caused public scandal?

Pygmailon&Galatea
-Where is Galatea not the subject?
-What does the sentence with the word enroyalled mean?
-What is the author saying about Pygmalion?
-I,II,III question-- why is Pygmailon jealous or something

Train
-What is the dominant metaphor of second paragraph? (Horse)
-What is the difference between the first and second paragraph or something along those lines
-What techniques are most often used?
-Where meaning of “if” is different rhetorically?

Poem
-What causes the “fetters”?
-What causes the poet’s dilemma?
-Why does he say…I don’t remember the sentence, but the answers were something like he was sticking to moral/ethical standards, he was sticking to literary conventions…

Kid Jones
-What effect does the continuity of beats have?
-What is not emphasized through the music?
-What is the best description of the effect of music on Kid Jones?

Need to rack my brain for other ones… :(

This is just what I got from what I can remember:

Mabel&LordWhatever
-What is Mabel’s style of saying things? Digressions
-Why would her accepting Tommy’s proposal teach both of them good manners? the other guy thought he had no competition and was the only one going for her
-What does she mean with her saying that she caused public scandal? Her affection is so obvious/women should conceal their love in public

Pygmailon&Galatea
-Where is Galatea not the subject?
-What does the sentence with the word enroyalled mean? was infused with some of the enchanted blood or something
-What is the author saying about Pygmalion?
-I,II,III question-- why is Pygmailon jealous or something

Poem
-What causes the “fetters”? Rhymes
-What causes the poet’s dilemma? He is tired of writing in the same vein/he’s better than his contemporaries but not as good as Shakespeare
-Why does he say it is his most correct? It’s most sticking to literary standards

Kid Jones
-What effect does the continuity of beats have? Emphasizes the immediacy of the situation?
-What is not emphasized through the music?
-What is the best description of the effect of music on Kid Jones? It’s a means of escape

Mabel & Lord:
-What is Mabel’s style of saying things?
What she says has more than one meaning?
-What does she mean with her saying that she caused public scandal?
I said her feelings were so intense and obvious.

Train:
-What is the difference between the first and second paragraph or something along those lines
I said they used similar techniques?

Poem:
-What causes the “fetters”?
Words?
-What causes the poet’s dilemma?
Better than all his contemporaries but not as good as Shakespeare.

Kid Jones:
-What is not emphasized through the music?
Presence of the piano player?

I agree with she has more than one meaning. She never actually digresses from the topic at hand. Ditto the similar techniques, not as good as Shakespeare, and piano player. (Doesn’t mean I disagree with the other stuff, just not bothered to list everything :P)

She digresses a bit…she talks about Tommy when he talks about loving her; she talks about how she looks in society; she says he’s probably never been refused, etc. You’re probably right, though.

What were the other options in the piano player q? I remember deciding between that and something else.

I agree with double meanings too. She never veers off-topic.

^ Yeah, I remember thinking all the choices were a bit strange… I was stuck between the piano player and his lover’s determination to leave him, I don’t remember any other answer choices though…

I don’t know about the other options, but they seemed correct- the piano player was mentioned exactly once. Stuff along the lines of how depressing it was because his lover left him, etc.

3 wrong so far…hoping for an 800 still!

I can’t find a consensus on the curves! I’ve heard 1,2,3…for an 800…anyone have hard evidence? For 790, too.

I got a 780 last time and got quite a few wrong so fingers crossed.

Hahaha my Lit score may turn out to be my best SAT score, actually. Just goes to show how useless SAT is at representing your intellectual skills, considering Lit was the one class I struggled with the most this year XD

^ Holy crap, you’re retaking a 780??

charizarrd… you’re on CC, where people ask if they should retake a 2390 SAT.

Hahaha true that, oh the beauty of CC… I’m just saying, I’d be over the moon if I got a 780 :)

Not saying I freaked out over the 780…didn’t go all OMGMYFUTURETISRUINED or anything, but I don’t have any 800s for the SAT II so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to take it one more time, since I was taking WH anyway (and since it’s a twice a year event I wasn’t going to cancel, which bound me to my score) and I only took it once. :)

The curve is so brutal that I’m not expecting a higher score that easily though.

This thread is depressing, looks like I might have to adjust my expectations downwards :(

I definitely think the passage that described the train with all those metaphors and descriptive language was DIFFICULT! Other than that, I enjoyed the poem about Pygmalion and his statue.

The second poem about the author was a little confusing though. Was “betwixt two ages” the author’s period and Shakespeare’s age?

Okay, that’s what I put, but I wasn’t sure.

Yes, I’m fairly sure that was it.

I don’t think Mabel’s style of talking has double meanings because she seemed to say everything very straight-forward, even things that were unconventional and slightly shocking. I put she has digressions because she mentioned Tommy, and also the thing about “being serious is the sort of thing a man always says to a girl before he has been married to her. He never says it afterwards” which was a bit of a digression I thought.
