June 2010 Math

poon, unless you can remember the question, it isn’t going on here.

Was it 300x/100-x to find how much more expensive it is to clean up 90% of a spill than 10%?

there are two ways of doing it

1.12+5+5=22

2.6+6+10=22

Ughh same mistake!

Okay, guys…I have another question that maybe you can assist me in recalling. However, this may have been experimental…

It was like a question with |x|, except all of the potential values of x were positive, so I remember thinking that they put the absolute value sign there to trick people who don’t know what absolute value means. However, this was not the maximum absolutely value (i.e., the -4 one).

EDIT: Not because I’m unsure about this one, but I want to make the list as complete as possible.

For the “90%/10%” question…

Is the answer 81? Did you have to divide by the number 90 and 10, or 90% and 10%(.9 and .1)

Packer: That sounds right.

Jr: Yes, the answer was 81.

@jr8500

If you plug 90 in 300(90)/100-90-> 2700

if you plug 10 in 300(10)/100-90->33.333

so 2700/33.33->81

Ok, guys goodnight.

In case you are interested, I’m 43.5 for 44. I think i probably got 36 for the meal, but I’m not positive. Which kills me, because I really want an 800. (not because I’m type A, but because I have a bet with a friend at school who thinks I can’t do it)

Oh, I thought it said to divide by the percent after reading it again (.9 and .1)… so I chose 9. I chose 81 first, then re-did the problem. :/

can someone please tell me this 9/8 french students question? was this the one where you got a bar graph and all you had to do was add eveything less than 2 and then add eveything greater than 2 and compare them. orrrrr did i do this wrong?

@Eagles,

Yes. Everything less than 2 and everything greater than 2. :)

I hope this puts an end to your suffering!

@bri1an… thanks soo much. i hope i added right. it would be really really gay if i didn’t.

if x+y= 240, then what is z? 60

^

What question was this? o-o
I don’t remember. : p

it was the second question in one of the sections. very basic problem.

@cribelle,

Yeah, don’t worry about that one. You probably don’t remember it because you did it in less than 5 seconds. :P

Haha alright.

I was looking through the list and remember most of them so just checking. :p

Anybody remember a question where you started with an integer, and then you had to change it a bunch of times by dividing by two, adding one, things such as that? And then you had to go back to the original number? I’m pretty sure the last transformation was to subtract two from the number, and that was the answer. Anyone confirm?

Can someone elaborate on the meal and bus questions? I don’t recall either. Looking good on the rest though, thanks!

I remember that, it could have been experimental though.

Answer was subtract two from …M I think.

Bus - At the 8th stop # people leave a bus, # people get on. At the next # people leave # get on. If there’s 31 at the end how many was there before the 8th stop.

Meal - Someone gives proportionate tips every time they go out to eat. If they give a tip of some amount for a meal of some amount whats the cost of the meal when they tip some other amount. xD
