June 6th SAT essay...

hey CC,
for the essay “is listening more important than speaking when trying to persuade?”
I used Iran hostage crisis, Booker T Washington, Rogerian argument and a sales person as my supporting examples…and my position is yes, listening is more important.
you think these examples will do?

Must you always choose a side, or is it acceptable to qualify? I used Adolf Hitler (speaking was more powerful since Germany was in a time of desperation and would accept anyone as a leader) and then compared that with 21st century politicians (listening more powerful given that they must sit back and analyze what the people want, in order to persuade their vote).

^ well, i didnt qualify, thought be risky and required thoughtful planning.
An argumentative essay isn’t about sides…but rather how well u support and present ur argument…

Wow that’s a lot of examples. As long as you were clearly able to demonstrate how each of those examples used listening for persuasion and illustrated clearly how that was the better choice. If you did, I would say that’s great! Those are really great historical references. I’m no test expert, I took the test the same day you did. But, I used the SAT book as my guide. My essay focused on two particular instances where listening was powerful for two politicians: A particular debate involving Ronald Reagan and the passing of the Obamacare bill by Barack Obama. I stated that in Reagan’s instance, had he not listened to his younger opponent during the debate criticizing his age, he would not be able to develop a counterargument using his age as a strength and his opponent’s youth as a weakness. As for Obamacare, I stated had Obama not listened to the other side(I really don’t care how politically accurate I am about the true amount of bipartisanship in this bill), the bill would not have received votes from both sides and therefore would not have passed. Hope this helped.

Scratch that second sentence. I meant to say as long as you were clearly able to demonstrate the benefit of X or the cons of Y when you made your argument and didn’t flip flop. I didn’t mean to pick a side for you. My bad.
