I just took the ACT for the first time and my score did not meet its expectations...I was expecting around a 28 maybe but scored slightly lower. My lowest was Science and Reading, respectively. After reading many posts about scores going down from previous ACT tests, I was wondering if a lot of people's composite scores went down because of a certain section(s) that was unusually difficult (Science was ridiculous). For me, scores in almost every area were lower than expectations. Please give me suggestions!! This is crucial whether I need to continue devoting time to the ACT or switch focus to 100% SAT. THANKS!

I have two things to say:

I found the last passages on both the reading and science sections to be very difficult. Much more difficult that previous ACTs I've taken.

Don't hedge your bets on one test or another. Do well on both.

June was my first time as well, and, if it was a hard test, I'm set.

I scored a 34 composite, with no prep. The science was not that hard with a little thinking and logic. The reading I scored a 36 in, can't complain. The math I surprised myself with a 34 (I expected 36).

I fear that the June test was easier than most. If not, I'll let you know when I retake in September (;

The test seemed easier on science for me because I am in AP Biology so I did not have to read at least 2 passages. Reading is still my weakness however, but I scored a 31. ehh its okay. 36 on math tho. 35 on science.

these are my thoughts on the june ACT:

english -- easier
math -- about the same (easier than April)
Reading -- a little easier
science -- harder

but i scored the highest on each individual section on this ACT than out of every single ACT i've taken... so this was my highest composite score too

Compared to the March ACT:

English-Harder.
Math- LIttle easier.
Reading; Harder.
Science- A lot easier.

I think the difficulty of the ACT is matter of personal perspective. In reality, the difficulty shouldn't make a difference, as ACT curves the scores either up or down to stay in line with past tests.

The ACT is a well-constructed test and you did well enough that it probably makes sense to re-test rather than switch--unless you did really well on the PSAT, suggesting it is more your "style". Don't let the score posters on this site scare you off.....You are in the range for many good colleges already and pinning your sense of self on getting a "perfect" score is hazardous. Relax and practice test some more and you will probably see improvements. The difficulty of various sections will vary from test to test but it is practice that makes the biggest difference, not second guessing yourself...

Thanks...I still did bad though, regardless of whether it is a first time deal. Currently I'm preparing to hopefully get a very high score on the PSAT so idk. I was so rushed on the reading and science section...the only section I had time left over was English.

the section that was pretty hard was definitely science...especially the bio part. i dont know how you could've done some of the questions if you didnt really know bio. some info wasnt mentioned in the passage.

passage 1 was not fair. i dont even think there were clues in the passages that helped answer some of the questions except that you just had to know it from biology...i'm giving the ACT another shot in september (along with PSAT preparation urgh) if i'm still not satisfied by then, i think sticking with the SAT would be better for me.

Anyone know if the Sept. ACT is usually easier or harder?
