Junior! Chance me please?

Hi! I’m a Junior and I just took my first SATs last month, so I’m sure I’ll take it again in May.

SAT: 1520
Average: 89.4 (I don’t know how to calculate GPA)
2 APs
Race: Hispanic

I heard BU has holistic type requirements- I go to a specialized arts high school, which means it’s one of the top high schools in the state- we have majors, and I major in art.

Other extracurriculars include:
-Arts Connection program: 2 years
-Debate team (started this year)
-Arts in Action club (using your talent to help the underprivileged- started this year)
-Alter Serving at Church- 4 years
-Interned at the Jessica Simpson company over the summer (1 month)

 • Volunteering at teaching English in elementary school in the Philippines (1 month)
 • Volunteering at church school (just started this year)
 • Won statewide Arts Connection contest

BU is one of the top colleges I want to apply to and I’m super hesitant of applying because of my 89 average, I really feel I won’t make it in. Is there anything specific BU looks for? I plan on applying for engineering.

Any other advice, please let me know!!

Retake your SATs and aim for above the BU average, which is 2016 out of 2400. You have good extracurriculars. Try to take more APs/honors next year? Overall you have a solid profile, however ENG is really competitive. Try taking some subject tests too if you can?

Will do! I couldn’t take more than 2 APs this year because my school didn’t offer that option for me, which I hope BU will probably notice in my app next year. I plan on taking 2 APs next year as well. And yes! I plan on taking the SAT IIi’s and ACTs as well. Just need to know if there’s anything I can Improve/add on top of this?

If your school doesn’t let you take more than 2 APs, be sure to mention that on the common application additional information section.

Your SAT is on the low side, so my recommendation would be to just prepare as much as possible between now and May. Go over practice problems and see if you can take some practice tests (actual previous tests if possible.)

Also, try to finish the school year off as strongly as you possibly can in your current classes. Even if you can get your grades up just a little bit, a 90% will still look more impressive than an 89.4%.

Good luck!

I’m definitely going to take the SATs a couple more times, and I plan on taking subject tests and the ACTs as well. We’re still in our first semester, and I’m definitely going to try to reach for at least a 90% this last marking period. Does the number of APs you take have a big impact on how admissions look at my app? What else do they look at, considering I bring up my test grades? (worried about my average)

Your essays. Do well on those. Seriously. :)
