Hello, I’m a Asian American living in Seattle Washington. I have been a resident in Seattle for 6 years now but i am still not perfect at english. I am a very shy person and i dont like talking in front of others a lot. Even in Middle school i knew studying was important but i was just not worried and my grades were very low with barely a 2.0GPA. Going up to my Freshman year, i didnt have that much friends and i skipped school A LOT. i just did not like school and school just was not fun without any friends. My grades were dropping too low and i skipped school too much that i almost had to go to a trial for it in court… My mom is a very strict lady when it comes to education because she was from a poor family in the countryside and did not get much education and graduated from a community college, she just wants me to have a better life than her and my dad in the U.S. Anyways, i did not go to a trial, but i transferred my school during the 2nd semester of my Freshman year. I improved my grades a bit with a 3.0 GPA. So my Freshman year was very bad. My Sophomore year was not that great too. I was still shy and i did not have friends but i still got a not bad GPA of 3.0 and 2.8. Going into Junior year, My GPAs are pretty bad. Currently i have a 2.1 GPA. I dont play any sport in high school and i didnt join any clubs in High school. I have a 140 hours in community service hours, and i got a 1350 practice SAT score and soon i will take my SAT. My 1st choice of university would be University of Washington in Seattle. I just think its a joke because of my GPA but i really want to go. I might take a summer school course on 1 or 2 subjects i did poorly and get my grades up and get at least a 3.1 GPA. I know this barely even meets the requirement for University of Washington. Since English isnt my first language and i kinda did bad on my English part on PSAT. Im trying to at least get a good score on my SAT, since i already screwed up on my GPAs pretty bad. Any tips or things i have to do for the rest of my Junior year or on my Senior year to get into University of Washington?
In my opinion you could take some summer classes and increase that GPA. Although GPA isnt everything it shows your dedication to the work you are doing. UW will also look into what classes you are taking, so that if you are taking all AP’s they may let a lower GPA slide slightly… still over a 3.5+
I took some summer classes for fun and they were easy A’s but it helped me figure out what I actually wanted to do! I would also encourage some club joining or activity joining, and a rigorous senior year to help boost that.
Dude just go to community college after high school. Get really good grades in at the community college so they see that you take further education school seriously and boom transfer to UW Seattle your junior year. You don’t have to worry about the SAT scores. Fresh start. Write in your UW essay about how you took matters into your own hands after high school to do your absolute best after struggling in HS.
You pretty much just have the rest of junior year and summer. Your university of Washington application will be due in November. Even if you sign up for rigorous senior year courses, without a track record of success, it’s not likely the adcoms will think you are excelling in them.
Lots of kids are rejected from schools they “really want.”
Save UW as a reach school and look for some safety and match schools. UW does reserve spots specifically for community college transfers so that is still one option.
Warning: colleges are schools. Yes, you have more freedom than in high school, but the academic side of UW is real.
